I cant help as far as the question the OP asked. BUT a real world case.
I towed my 33ft Cougar 301BHS everywhere, beach, mountains and in between. I had Reese 12K hitch with HP dual cam anti-sway setup. I never got over 9.5mpg towing that rig. I might get 10 going downhill and a tail wind. But the average for the 6 years we owned was 9.5mpg. We bought the 5er, a much heavier trailer with a taller footprint and length. I knew my MPG was going to suffer. ITS bigger, heavier, etc.
To my surprise I am getting better MPG than the TT.
At first I thought I was wrong on my figures.. but here we are 3 years later and I am averaging 10.75-11.00MPG each trip.. this last trip to the coast of NC I got a whole 11.73 MPG. BUT most of the trip is on highway US 70 and not on interstates so I know that helped with most speeds being around 55 or under. My interstate MPG has been around the 10.75MPG range..
Go figure!!!
The only thing I can think is the 5er hangs over the bed of the truck and the wind doesn't go over the cab and then across the bed into the flat front of the TT. With cougars front cap design I think it goes over the cab of the truck and right over the top of the 5er???
So I am sure this did NOT help the OP but just some real life MPG #s.
I just wish diesel would drop to around $3.00 a gallon over the next few weeks so I can finish out my camping season with some cheaper costing fuel.
