Home depot does sell bucket lids for those painters buckets. Not a bad idea in a pinch. But, my optimism for humanity is proved wrong every time, I doubt they have lids..

How do you think they'll get it from that big bucket into the little gas fill hole? But then again, they may not have any gas left in the bucket without a lid by the time they get there. My guess is they're fleeing north. At least they're (sort of) thinking ahead.

This is one reason why you can't pump your own gas in New Jersey. I hope there are no children in the car.

Like most events many will choose the wait until the last moment to leave. Only after they spend days talking to their friends and family some hundreds of miles away taking advice from them instead of the local people. I have been that officer going to homes and telling people to leave NOW. I could write a book on what excuses they make. Like I need to ask my son he is xxxxx miles away.

No, the highly skilled workers in Jersey would never put gas in those buckets ...... they are the wrong color. Red for gas, yellow for diesel and blue for kerosene.

Yes, I am a snowbird too from King's Gate Park ...... that is if it is still there on Monday. We will see if the Indian legends about Nokomis are true.
See you at the North Jetty, Hank

Population control in its simplest form.

Ken, this may be the first time I have ever disagreed with you. Your quote "taking advice from them instead of the local people" seemed quite a ways off kilter, shall we say.
All over America we watch the hurricanes move in and we yell at the screen "Get out! Get the H out of there!" And then we watch the homeowners in Houston and all over Florida standing in line to try to buy plywood, gas and a generator the day before it is to hit. You live in Florida and you don't own a small generator? Really?
A small point, Ken, but I think the majority of these people would be better off if they DID listen to their friends and family from out of town.

...and public officials. Last year for hurricane Matthew we were getting ready to sit tight as we were not in an evacuation zone. As a precaution I powered up the fridge in the trailer as our neighborhood often loses electric power during storms. We woke up Thursday morning to find out we were now in an evacuation zone, so we quickly packed the trailer (in the rain!), moved as much food as we could, and headed west. We had some broken branches and no electricity for four days after we returned. Everyone who stayed was very lucky as the storm stayed mostly out to sea, but it could have been much worse.

Finding a campground in "safe" territory during the storm was a challenge. We ended up west of Tallahassee in a small, private campground. The owner went out of his way to make accommodations for anyone who needed them. He even went so far as to buy us a pizza dinner one night and organize a communal breakfast another. While we were worried about the family that remained behind, we certainly had an enjoyable time while being evacuated.

As for Irma, my DW's sister (south Jacksonville) ended up with over 2 feet of water (from the rising river) in her house; another family member in central Florida had a tree come down on the house and water infiltrate the ground floor (subterranean, she lives on a bluff), but mostly the extended family (from Ft. Lauderdale area to Sarasota, Tampa, St. Augustine and Tallahassee) just lost electric power (and are still without power). But no one was hurt; it could have been much, much worse. We are still in Maine, but family reports no damage to our house. Again, we were very lucky.

It will be interesting to see what Jose does. Several of the tracks have it headed to New England. While it will be greatly diminished in strength by the time it gets here, I'm certain it will still be packing lots of water and wind.

This was posted on the local Jacksonville paper's web site showing some of the flooding in the area and throughout Florida. The "opening" image with the winged messenger statue is at Memorial Park (https://www.google.com/maps/@30.3108931,-81.6813727,17z).
