Route Us14 or Us16 across Bighorn Mtns?

We will be traveling from Custer,Sd to Cody,Wy pulling a 22ft TT with 2017 Ram 1500. Anyone have experience with the elevation changes, curves on these roads? Which one is the “easiest”?We have never traveled in the western mountains. TIA

We were on 14 last Aug. It was under major constuction! We drove for miles on what was just a gravel road. I guess they may be done by now, but I would be suprised if they were!

Two years ago we went the opposite direction - from Cody to Sheridan on 14. Stopped at a campground by Burgess Junction for a few days. We didn’t have a problem going that way. But I *think* 16 is an easier drive if I’m remembering correctly, meaning not as steep. I hope someone else will chime in since I’ve never towed on 16, just driven it over the years and didn’t really pay attention for if we were pulling the camper that way.

Here is the sign posted near Burgess Junction showing the grades for 14 and 14A. I apologize for the second photo being sideways, that seems to be a problem for me...

If you have a chance and are stopping in the Big Horns for a couple of days, the Medicine Wheel off of 14A is very interesting to see. It’s a hike uphill to get to it, but worth it. Also, if going west on I-90, the Vore Buffalo Jump just east of Sundance, WY is also an interesting stop.

Hwy 16 is a lot easier and when you come into Buffalo Wyoming on I-90 it's right there. Hwy 14 or 14a has some real steep grades but is real pretty once you get on top.

Three years ago we towed over 14 after spending a couple weeks in Hill City, Ellsworth, Wall and Rapid City. After 2 days in Sturgis, we landed in Sundance for a couple days, did the Vore Buffalo Jump, Devil's Tower and enjoyed some very good food in some of the "out of the way stops" while riding the back roads from Devil's Tower back to St Onge.

If you decide to "brave the hardest of the two" (14) the scenery is awesome. We towed 16 the following summer (2 years ago) and while it's a slightly easier tow, the scenery just doesn't justify avoiding 14. If it were me, I'd take 14 through the passes, plan an all day venture and stop at every "scenic turnout" with your camera in hand. Just remember, if you climb a pass in second gear, leave it in second for the downhill run, your brakes will thank you at the bottom......

I have not towed 14A, so I can't give you any information on that route.

14 is a great road. Pulled several times with 5er. It’s really not an issue if you use sound judgement when towing
