First time out in new camper - Slideout damaged

It was going too good to be true. We took a short trip to a state park with lots of pine trees. Everything went smoothly until after I cleaned the plant matter from the top of the slides. I used a step ladder with padding leaned against the side of the slide. I left it leaning against the forward end of the front slide and closed the slide.

I think I was fortunate not to have done more damage to the slide. The siding didn't take it well but maybe it can be repaired to some extent.

My concern is what I can't see on the slide mechanism. What I can see is in the pic. Pardon if I don't know what to call everything. The flat outer facing strip that holds the seal is pushed out about 1/4" and has a slight crease. I think I can use clamping and wood blocks to push it back in place.

When I retracted the slide, the forward side was raised towards and almost touching the ceiling.

I checked all the welds, bolts and junctions I could see with it extended and found no visible damage underneath. It still runs smooth without noise or jerking.

It has the Lippert Through Frame Rack.

How bad can it be and what else do I need to look for?

Sorry that you experienced that damage on your new coach. With aluminum siding, it'll be a much cheaper repair than damage to an RV constructed with fiberglass walls.

Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with Lippert's through frame slide out. I'm sure someone else will chime in.

Just an FYI, I installed slide toppers (awnings) in order to keep 'nature' off the tops. It's worked well for 2 seasons. Haven't been up on a ladder at a campsite yet. Everything just falls off when the slides are retracted. I like the insurance.

Hope the repairs are quick and inexpensive. Good luck.

Thanks for your reply. Toppers are in my future plans.

I had our dealer install a topper on the slideout. Didn't like the idea of having to get up on a stepladder to clean off the top of the slideout before retracting it.

There are pros and cons to a slide topper. Some say they do this and that but, mainly we camp in pine trees and a topper is a must unless I want to sweep the slide top every trip. No need with a slide awning.

On my older forest river that I use to have had a slide awning. I liked it except when it rained, the slide would hold water bad so when you would retract, it would cause it to roll up crooked. However my new 5th wheel does not have slide awning but thinking about getting them installed

Can anyone advise me on likely damage to the slide mechanism?

If the room “runs” all the way in and out smooth, then chances are the mechanism is ok. From your description there may be an alignment problem. Just a WAG as I’m not standing there looking at it.

The room seals are in the same place they were before the incident. Does that indicate good alignment?

The flange was a little warped but I straightened it.

Room seals on the slide or the body of the coach? If both appear to be in the same position as before then your probably ok.

The tin can be replaced, but it’s probably not a DIY job for a layman.

The damage covers three pieces of siding. The one piece with the most damage will need to be replaced. All pieces go all the way to the front and have window or hatch involved. I'm going to play with some dent removal techniques for the dings with no scratches and try to save two pieces. If I cant get them out I may leave them. Depends on the siding cost. It looks like it would be about as easy to replace all three pieces though.

I'm planning to get an estimate next time I go to dealership.

The seal between the flange and the siding was pushed out with the flange. The seals that ride on the slide appear to be sealing.

My experience is that it does not take much at all to dent this siding on the hideout. I was on the ladder once checking the roof and it leaned up against the siding and made a dent. I think i sneezed to hard one time and saw the siding bend.....

BTDT !!! The 0.020 siding used on trailers is often called, "Oh too thin" siding... Keystone "improved" their siding and now uses 0.022/0.024 aluminum. IMHO, like an extra 2 thousands is going to make a difference..... Jayco, for a while, used to stamp a pattern in their "Oh too thin" siding, sort of like the thin gauge aluminum trailer boxes now have, thinking the "pebble pattern" would help reduce dents. All it really did was mask them so they're harder to see and make holes that hold dirt and make the siding look old and dirty all the time.

"Tin foil" crinkles easily, 0.020 siding crinkles almost as easy and 0.022 siding dents when you sneeze..... But hey, it's easier and cheaper to replace than the vacuum formed sandwich FILON used in its place......

First time out slide out damaged

I have a 2011 268rls Outback with a full slide. The metal on the slide is very solid. I have a difficult time seeing your pictures, but it appears the alignment is ok. I am confused as to the metal strips you are referring to...are these the metal on the outside of the camper slide? If so, I would be tempted to dyi it. As far as the seal, before I guessed it was sealing, I would spray water all around the seal to make sure the alignment was not effected. Hope this helps a little. My camper is fiberglass, so maybe I am all wet!
Good luck!
