Planning a trip in Oregon

We are now planning next year’s trip to the west coast. Is route 101 along the cost ok for a 31 feet fifth wheel?

Thanks

I'd be cautious of the Heceta Tunnel just north of Florence and south of Newport.
Tunnel is marked over 14' towards the center but under 12' at the edges. There is usually too much traffic to ride the center. The edge of our Cougar roof is right at 11ft. We took it slow and careful when we went through, cheating to the center line, lights and flashers on.
Here's a video I found:

Passengers get to enjoy the beautiful coast, while the driver needs to keep eyes on road. Heavy traffic most everyday during summer or any good weather. lots of curvy and at times hilly highway. Traffic is stop and go through most any city. That road is nearly all 1 lane each direction until in the bigger cities.

That 14" marker is at the fog line. 101 is a major north south highway used to supply all the towns along it, full size semis travel all the time no issues. There are several tunnels on 101 along the coast most. There is no place where you should have clearance issues with a 5er under 13'-6".

We travel a lot of 101 hosting, as many have stated in the past it is best to travel 101 on the Oregon coast from North to South, not so much for access to State Parks but the numerous Ocean View points are on West side of the highway, and don't require crossing traffic.

My Favorite is Lincoln City, road keeps changing two to four lanes!

There is always some fool trying to race ahead of you!

Just came down 101 with my 37' 5th wheel. No problems with the tunnels......mine is 12'6" and cleared the tunnel north of Florence with no problems.

2 years ago I did the drive from Fort Steel to South Beach state parks.

The road was pretty bad, but nothing to be concerned about. Just rougher than I expected and no places to let people by. Did have one idiot pass me on the shoulder well after the merge lane ended.

Just expect it to take a bit more time than you'd think.

Hwy 101 is the major Highway supplying the coast and should have no clearance issues. It is primarily a 2-lane scenic road with many steep hills, and every town along the way will slow you down to 30-35 MPH. There is much fun and beauty on this route, but plan to take your time. Also, the road is prone to major landslides, and frequently must be closed for extended repair during the winters, so check just before you head out. The detours rarely are ideal for long rigs.

We traveled out of Astoria all the way south on 101 just north of San Francisco no problem 40' 5th wheel. As mentioned earlier small challenges navigating traffic in Lincoln City and Newport the rest is a breeze...
