Getting ready

Countdown to Oregon for the eclipse. Rebuilt A/C in truck last weekend, blows COLD. 7 new shoes this last Sat. Today I washed exterior, 303 on the roof. Tomorrow I'll start the refer and the DW will start packing clothes.

Reservations at Shasta city KOA for Friday night. On to my sisters house in Salem on Sat. Reservations in Portland for mon/tues after eclipse. Thinking of stopping in Medford on wed/thurs night. Friday night back in Shasta city, home on Sat.

Open to photo ops between Portland and Medford on I-5 if anybody can suggest a campground.

Hello chuckster57:

Hope that you have an enjoyable and rewarding view of the eclipse.

We are currently at Winchester Bay in Oregon and will be traveling to Salem next Monday and Tuesday for the eclipse. News media is stating that the roads will be crowded and some businesses will be closed. The state has even called in the National Guard for crowd and traffic control.

Have an enjoyable road trip and thank you for all your contributions to the forum.

I heard that traffic would be bad. Hopefully moving from Shasta to Salem on a Sat should be ok. Monday's trip to Portland shows pretty quick and since the eclipse is in the AM hopefully the crowds will be somewhat gone by the time we leave Salem

Went to Harbor Freight this afternoon and picked up welding goggles for viewing.

We've stayed here several times while traveling southward for the winter months. Beautifully landscaped park with all the amenities. Shuttle to the casino if so desired.

Be careful with welding goggles. Unless they have a lens shade rating of #12 or more, they won't filter out the unreversable damaging light that solar viewing will cause. Harbor Freight sells filter rating #10 goggles. Don't know if a budget retailer would even sell #12's. My dad, a retired 40 year welder, could only buy his lenses from industry specialty shops.

We'll be laying over on the otherside of the country in Orangeburg, SC for the day as we make our way down to Disney's Fort Wilderness. We'll have our NASA approved American Paper Optics solar glasses. Original bought some cheap Chinese knockoffs but Amazon sent me a letter of warning to only use products from manufacturers recommended by AAS and NASA. Letter attached...

Anyways, a good time to be had by millions of "totality" seekers. Just hope the millions don't drive the same route as me!

I used the welding glasses on the last eclipse, but thank you for the information. Just ordered a 5 pack from Amazon (next day shipping)

They have pull thru's longer than that. 40 foot trailer + truck is no problem. Last time I was there, there was several Large (45') MH's with toads. Wife and I have stay there a couple times a year. Quiet and Great food at the casino!

Ok, based on recommendations here and from a customer, we have booked 2 nights at sevenfeathers. Should be quiet since it will be wed/thurs AFTER the eclipse. Starting to get antsy....

We're headed up from Arkansas to St Joseph, MO. I've had the campground booked since last August. Wondering about the weather now... might have to head east, or west, if the clouds don't break.

A friend is flying into Madras, OR with his plane for the eclipse. They gave him a landing time slot and a $200 charge. They're expecting 40,000 people in town. FORTY THOUSAND PEOPLE IN MADRAS.

I thought about flying up to Gates, between Salem and Madras. A friend lives just across the Santiam from the grass strip, but six hours round trip for a two minute event with a swarming crowd? I tried calling the airport to see how many they are expecting, but no answer. Pass...

The forecast in the Salem area is 90F and sunny for the event. No clouds. Good. Enjoy.

Sorry, no help with suggestions for a CG on I5. More of a Hwy 20 guy.
We're going to sneak up to Star Valley, WY. 99.7% totality according to the Naval Observatory. FIL has a cabin there.
Had plans for shooting at Teton NP, Snake River Overlook. Rangers there said they expect upwards of 500,000 people!! in the park. We'll stick close to the cabin for this event.
Tell your wife I said good luck with her photos. I think I'm just going to watch and enjoy this one unless I can score some #14 welder's glass as a filter.
