Pumping fuel - Oregon & Washington

I just read that I cannot pump my own fuel in the above two states.

The law says gas dispensing - so I should be able to pump my own diesel can't I as it is not flammable.

Seems some stations will let you and some won't....

I don't understand this - either I can or I can't - anyone have experience with either of these two states? Are these the only two that have such a policy? I never heard of this before.

Oregon is mini serve so they pump. Washington you pump your own.

Cost is the same....in Oregon you pay for the help and in Washington you pay the governor.

Same thing in New Jersey. All stations are full service at all pumps. Some stations let you pump diesel but that is up to their interpretation of the law. It actually creates a lot of jobs and prevents a lot of spills. Just make sure they pump diesel if that is what you need.

When we went to Oregon & Washington, the first gas station we fueled at put a "Diesel" tag on the inside of our fuel door. That helped with the possible confusion at the pump.

As stated earlier, they do have to pump it and run your credit card (if you use one). Took some getting used to but it worked out OK.

You Kids! There was a time in this country ( don't know about Canada) when they pumped your gas, checked your tire pressure, your motor oil and washed your windows. Then they ran your credit card, gave you green stamps or blue chip stamps, a coffee mug with your favorite team logo on it(in lead based paint) and said "Thank you and come again"! Ahh, the good old days!

I still have some of those glasses .... maybe that's why my memory is so bad. Think I have a tiger tail somewhere too. Ahh! the good old days, 24¢ a gallon and a free glass.

I'm with Ruffus & Hankpage. I remember the days of .25 cent gas. Gas stations where your car would be swarmed with 3 (yes 3) guys, who would clean all your windows, check all your fluid levels, check your tire pressure, fill your tank, take your money, and say "thank you for your business."

Ahh, the good old days! Now we accept as normal that we pump our own gas and are suspicious of a station that wants to do it for us. My how things have changed (and not for the better!)

At least I remember those days and can share the memories with my Son. Like the "Doughnut Man", "Ice Cream Man", "Drive-In's", etc. We sure had it good and we didn't even know it!

There was a time when the oil that was needed for your engine was stored in Glass bottles and was just a straight weight. Also if I remember correctly this was .25 or .30 a quart. Back then the rings would only last 20,000 to 30,000 miles and you would use to say fill up the oil and check the gas.

As far as diesel truck stops go, who fills up the diesel rig's? When pulling my fiver, I am usually at a Love's Or Travel Center of America filling up with the long haul trucks. More room for my 5TH wheel and truck.

No such law in Washington. I used to live in Washington and went to school in Oregon. I used to time my fill ups so that I could pump my own gas.

You realize that pumping at the big rig pumps you are probably paying more. I have found that many states have a heavy users road tax.

I have a web site that checks diesel fuel prices and road taxes, I have found that there is no difference in most states. In IL for example all diesel for on-road use has the same fuel tax regardless of were you fill-up for diesel. I found this to be true in OH, VA, NC, and TN this year. IN was the only state that required a tax number for truckers and I could not fill up at the Loves station when I was at in the truck islands. The station was design to allow pick-ups and 5er or real long travel trailers to fill -up in the normal service islands.
I would check out a publication called The RVers Friend, this list by state the fuel tax on diesel fuel and gasoline and I believe there is no differenitation for light duty vehicles and long haul trucks.
I will pay for the added tax if it means I do not have to worry about cars and small fill-up islands. When trying to get my truck and 5er in and out of fueling stations.

P.S. AL fuel tax for Gasoline and Diesel is $0.08.

So we arrived in Rogue River, Oregon on Wednesday - staying two nights at Valley of the Rogue River SP.

We drove over to Grants Pass & they pumped our fuel. We had to wait for a diesel pump & then run over our ATM card (they only took ATM card or exact cash) and since we never know how much fuel it will take, we used the ATM card.

Guy pumped it - dumped some on the ground and on the truck - had to clean that up & we got a receipt from the machine and were on our way.

What do we do if we have the camper? Are there truck stops??
Because the 2 stations we did see were 1) very busy 2) cars allover the place and 3) we could have NEVER gotten our truck and trailer into that station or lot......

Maybe we'll make 'quick' of Oregon..........we'll see.

Yes- there are truck stops along the major n/s and e/w routes in both states. Flying J to name one. If you go online, you should be able to find out which truck stops are along your route or if you don't have a planned one, you should be able to find out which ones are available and where they are located. If you have a GPS, that should provide you with the names and locations of fuel. It probably won't tell you if they have diesel however.

i love the stations like loves but they are normally too busy so i normally drive into town and usually (not always) there is a shell, marathon, Thornton's, ect. small locally owned station that is big enough for my rv and they are not as busy.

Yes, "they" pump in Oregon, and "you" pump in Washington. Except . . . at Crater Lake NP. On Federal land, there is no "they", it's all "you". So, if you head up to Crater Lake NP and pull up at the pump in Alice Springs Campground and Store, go ahead and get out to pump your own - you'll just grow old waiting. By the way - no diesel.

Heck at my fav station in Calif I even pump my own propane... very "frowned" upon by the powers that be but the station owner loves it as he is free to do other things.

In Oregon the law does NOT apply to diesel. Living in Oregon I've never had a pump jockey stop or even question me for pumping my own diesel in the 6 years I've had m Duramax. If the pump jockey doesn't come immediately, I get out, run my card and start filling. Nor have they ever said anything when I top off the tank if they started the pump.
