Map of Keystone RV'ers?

I know most people have their location in their profile.. But I think it would be interesting to see an overview of where everyone is...

Lets see if this works...

http://g.co/maps/nrmt2

It's a Google map that I made public, but unlisted. Anyone can edit it to add a thumbtack with their location and comments.

It won't be found via google search however. You can only get to it via the link in this thread.

I figured out that even though I made the map editable by anyone, it means editable by anyone logged in to their google account.

So if you have one, and want to play....

1) Log in to Google
2) View the map via the link in post 1 of this thread
3) Click the edit button

4) Add your link using the tool palette which will appear after edit mode is enabled

^^ More info about adding map features -> http://support.google.com/maps/bin/a...7289&ctx=topic
Other cool things you can add (movies, pics, some GEO stuff) -> http://support.google.com/maps/bin/a...7289&ctx=topic

5) Drag your "thumbtack" to your home city... Give it a title and description.

(FYI - I found I could zoom and drag at the same time. Makes it easier since the map seems to open zoomed way out showing the whole USA.)

6) Click the done button. Tool palette will disappear and you can see all the thumbtacks in the left pane.

Very cool. Looks like 3 others already added themselves!

I've got the 5er loaded and just about to head out. I wonder how many more will be added by the time I return Sunday evening??

Moderator's Note:

One of the goals of our forum is to protect our members' privacy, security and identity. In order to accomplish this, we have a policy in place regarding the use of your personal email address, phone number and other personal information anywhere in your posts, including user name, avatar, and signature. We also encourage our members that, when registering, you do not disclose your exact location. Instead, we suggest that you use a general area such as a county, state, province or region rather than your town or city. This is an additional precaution to ensure your privacy.

Since the forum is part of the Internet, it is "open" for all to see. While the information in your profile is locked down and visible to members only, posts and any links within them, are visible and accessible to visitors. If you go to "Quick Links" (Blue bar at top of page) and click on "Who's On Line" at the bottom, you will readily see a list of members currently using the forum plus a large number of other "guests and visitors". Most of these guests are legitimate and are searching for information to be used in a data base somewhere else. Some, however, may be looking for personal information that they may use for illegitimate purposes.

Consequently, you might want to carefully consider taking part in this Google activity in which you would be revealing the town or city in which you live.

Thank you.

Yes, seriously. The same for Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. But since this is a RV Forum, "someone" sees that you are not to far from them. And say that you have also used your initials as a Forum login. You make a post that says you are heading off to Durango, CO for two weeks. You have probably taken great pains to properly locate yourself on the map. Additionally, the "someone" does an appraisal district search in the map area for last names starting with "D". Your name comes up. Off to Google street view, and there is your house with your RV sitting in the drive! "Someone" prints off a map to your house, drives by and sure enough you are gone.

I could continue, but I bet you have an idea already. I'll say this, even Google Street View has pictures of the house and block I formerly owned in Wagoner, OK! Besides, don't count on Google being that secure. You are your best security.

To add to my previous message, I just visited the Forum as a "Guest" on my Android phone. That is, I did not log in. I tapped the link and connected via Google maps. I am able to see several of our members have posted. With the smartphone it's easy to zoom in. I also noticed that it appears we might have a member much further south, much further.

Personally, I think it is a neat idea to be able to see where our members are or might be. But the instant connectivity of the Internet, mobile devices, GPS, etc., can also present a huge liability. We know each other via the Forum and have a common trust from our common interests. But we also have the single time visitors, usually who want to complain. But what if the single visitor had other clandestine motives? I've worked with computers since the days of the IBM 1130 (pre-System 360 for those who might know what that means, for others it means my gray hair is real and well earned). Today's ability to access personal data can be very disconcerting.

SAD - Sorry, I am just trying to be a voice of concern. To "make good" , if you would like, send me a private message if you would like to hear how I once got "escorted" out of a research facility of your fair Green Country town, possibly your place of employment.

I sure hope that guy out in the middle of the North Sea has the "Polar Package" and a good set of water wings. It's a shame that there are always some clowns that have to mess with a good idea.
