This information has been posted two times in threads within the past 24 hours. While it's understood that not everyone will read every thread, when adjacent threads titled: "Roof cleaning / treating is a waste of time and money" and "What's your roof? EPDM or TPO" it's pretty easy to find the information. Remember, the SEARCH feature in the top blue bar of every forum page is "your friend". Try it, it is a useful tool!

At any rate, the easiest "test" to determine if your roof is EPDM or TPO is to remove a roof vent shroud on the INSIDE of your RV. You'll find the roofing membrane has been cut and folded back against the vent opening. If the roofing membrane is black with a "colored surface" then it is EPDM. If there is a felt backing that obscures the base membrane, it's TPO,

If the roofing membrane is a solid color (same color on top and bottom) then it is a TPO roofing product.

is TPO better? my previous trailer was a 2007 outback, never had a roof issue, I hope for the same from this new trailer.

I don't know if you can describe EPDM or TPO as "better than" or "not as good as" in most situations. EPDM is a "rubber membrane" and when dirty, the dirt will support algae growth which will stain the EPDM and can lead to problems and/or black streaks on the sidewalls. TPO is a "Thermoplastic polyolefin" which does not support algae growth as readily (although any dirt, leaves, foreign material left on the roof will support algae). It doesn't stain as readily and hopefully won't produce as much "black streak staining" on the sidewalls. Both EPDM and TPO are "warrantied for 12 years" so the durability "should be" (the jury is still out on this) near the same.

The main benefit with TPO is that it's much lighter in weight. This is one of the primary reasons it's being used on almost all "ultra-light" and "Half ton" RV's.

One major difference is the type of sealant you need to use when repairing or resealing your roof. DICOR lap sealant is used on EPDM, DICOR Ultra Sealant with primer is used on TPO roofing. If you use DICOR lap sealant on TPO, it will work, but it may cause bulging or bubbling of the membrane which can be unsightly. It won't "weaken" the TPO but just makes it "look bad."

I did a repair not too long ago on my roof when a tree branch gouged the membrane out. Repaired it with eternabond. I just assumed it was epdm because the rubbery feel but I guess tpo is like that too.

The piece of roofing membrane in your hand is TPO. EPDM is black (rubber) with a white coating. TPO is a solid color throughout the membrane.
