I'd say it's payload, tongue weight, and BRAKING. I drove the heck out of some F-150s with the 4.6L and 5.4L V8s - both were solid motors. If they get the job done, use 'em. I can say, however, that more modern trucks are attracting higher tow ratings at least partly by brake size.... When I sold the 2004 Ford for a 2012 Tundra, the braking world was night and day...
And yes, our trailers (usually) have brakes.. But when they start getting big - especially in the 12k+ range on only 2-axles, I'll be darned if I've towed one that would stop very well on it's own...
