no cp4 fuel pump problems?
Frequent lurker/reader here seldom poster. I'm puzzled that I haven't found any CP4 fuel pump catastrophe stories here. Especially from the DMAX crowd. As most probably know in 2011-2016 dmax switched from a high $ overdesigned cp3 fuel pump to a totally redesigned cheaper cp4. All of this happened as lubrosity of diesel was falling. As a result significant numbers of CP4 fuel pumps have failed in a spectacular fashion taking out whole fuel systems with them. they often happened somewhere beyond the 100K point. If you want to know more check out the duramax forum. there are also class action law suits.
I am just wondering just how bad the problem is. I'm told that those dmaxs with added lift pumps and added fuel lubrosity additives may well survive past 200K. OTOH I hear of stories of people having their trucks cp4s replaced only to have them crater within a few thousand more miles.
Its my understanding that Ford also switched to the cp4. They have a lift pump and that might be saving them. As far as dmax goes they have left Bosch and are going with Denso and now no surprise they also include a lift pump.
Seeing no complaints here makes me wonder about the frequency of the problem UNLESS everyone here buys a new one before they get to the 100K mile point.

Had a '05 traded at 176k & a '13 sold with 140k neither had any fuel delivery issues. The '13 had a recall for the DEF pump & tank, but no fuel issues. As far as I'm concerned the Duramax/Allison combo is tough to beat for dependability, mileage, performance & resale.

The majority of CP4 pump problems that I have seen and heard of are from tuned trucks. There have been some stock ones go, but not near as many as tuned.
If you're worried there are kits to swap the CP4 to the older style CP3, I've also heard adding a lift pump can help.
I have a stock 2015 with the LML and have had no problems, but I'm 100% stock. And that's very hard for me to do. I had an '06 LBZ that was far from stock. But using mine for towing now changes priorities.

I had a 03 2500 that had lots of problems but I stuck with it until 265k miles and my mechanic advised to trade it off as it was showing signs of CP3 trouble. But the real decision was made by DW. Seems every time we went on a trip some $800 thing went wrong. She said truck goes or I am done traveling.
Traded for a 14 3500 SRW. It was a good truck until DEF tank heater failed at ~100,700 miles (700 miles out of warranty). We decided to trade for a 19 3500 DRW. No more CP4 to worry about.

GM extended the warranty for the DEF tank heater to 10 years or 120,000 mile.
My 15 had the heater replaced around 60,000 miles.

But to do the swap you have to reprogram & with all the tuners shut down you won't be able to find anyone unless you look north.

All the tuners shut down? It took them a while to crack the LML ECM, but you can tune it. EFI live is tuning them as well as others. Emissions deletes are illegal, but swapping a CP4 for CP3 is not deleting anything illegally.

Starting in 2015, Ford 6.7L used a modified CP4 which employed a new coating on the pump pistons designed to reduce friction and help the pump survive small amounts of water. I use cetane booster every other tank to help with lubricity due to low sulfur in American diesel fuel. I also check my water separator every month and never have had a problem! If you are really worried check out S&S Fuel Bypass system!

I saw the switch to Denso, which comes with a frame mounted filter and an in tank lift pump. A good move by GM.

Most guys here probably don't put that many miles on. 10K miles/year for a 2011 would be less than 100K most don't seem to have problems till 200K or more.

I think the problem has been exaggerated quite a bit, at least on the Ford side. I know water will kill these beast and I installed a Dieselsite filtration system on mine just for another layer of protection. I can see if there is any water in the two clear fuel bowls and it gets the fuel before the factory filters do. Only a few drops of water in them and nothing has made it to the OEM since the install. 184K miles and runs like new. Really impressed with the newer diesels.

Had a 2014 WITH the DieselSite filters. Didn't help. The CP4 failed. Never had a Water in Fuel warning. No water in the DieselSite filters. There is a class action suit going on. Most owners never made a stink because their insurance picked up the $10,000 tab. Bosch warned Ford and GM that it wasn't the right pump for the US.

Just a question, was the truck tuned or stock?

Class action lawsuits generally only benefit the lawyers.
