Battery overcharging

Hi folks,
I new to rving and bought a 2005 343l. I just discovered that when hooked up to 50amp shore power the battery is boiling out. I had the unit hooked up to 115vac, 20 amp service in the driveway for several weeks and didn't have the problem. All the AC and DC outlets/lights are working in the trailer.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Steve

Steve, I had this issue on a 2005 Jayco. Turns out the converter was simply "peak and hold" meaning it charged to 14.2 and held it there. In the case of the Jayco, there was a plug-in for the converter that made it "smarter" - no longer peak and hold... Find your converter make/model and report back.

Thanks for the reply. I saw a message in the tech folder that said 'older' units may not have a trickle charge capability. Unfortunately older wasn't defined.
My converter is built by Luminex RV products, model L041128, serial # 5105-RV010779.

Hi Steve,

I don't see any correlation between being plugged into a 20A service or 50amp. The Converter will only pull the required current to supply it's output(s).

Sheesh. Luminex RV Products don't turn up much. Whatever that thing is (model L041128) there is almost no documentation for it, barring a few used units and salvage units. As such, I can't read the manual to tell you what it does.

If you have a volt meter, simply put it on the battery and tell me what the peak voltage is. Leave it on for a few more hours, repeat the process.

Ideally, a converter will have multiple charge modes, like:
13.2 VDC Float, 13.6 VDC Normal, and 14.4 VDC Boost

If it's charging peak and hold over about 13.7 or so - it's going to do what you describe and boil out the battery. Your choices are to manage the charging or replace it...

Changing the input voltage, 120V@20A or 240V@50A - shouldn't make any difference...

Unfortunately, the only fix is to upgrade to a better converter. Here's a down-to-earth explanation.
