Racks
Morning everyone, so was wanting to know if anyone has figured out a way to haul kayaks when going camping? Short of a ladder rack on the bed of the truck i do not see any other way to do it safely or logically. I have seen some that were homemade and some that were done by certain manufacturers but are no longer around. So i thought some of the fine folks on here may have some ideas or a system that works. Thank you

Like you, I didn't see a good way to haul them on the trailer. I went with a rack on my roof and that has worked really well.

I have a headache rack, and have carried them tilted against it. I bought a rack for tha back of the truck and will be putting it on shortly. I lose my cover if I have the rack on, so that kinda sucks, but it's easier to carry the kayaks that way.

Same here, use a ladder rack, but lose the tonneau cover when the kayaks come with us.

I have a 4 door cab on my Colorado pickup, and have my kayaks on top of the cab area and then put pokes in the back area.

Got a ladder? I've seen them stood on end and strapped to the trailer ladder.

"Short" kayaks will work "on a ladder". If you tie a 12' kayak to the ladder with the bow or stern sitting on the bumper (that's 24" off the ground) that will put the other end of the kayak 14' in the air. Max height is 13'6", so you may have a "shorter than expected kayak" when you arrive at the campground...... Of course, living on the edge is fun for some, YMMV.....

Also, I’m thinking of building a kinda basket where they could be slid into from the rear of my 5th wheel. Have an idea, just no time to execute

When our TV was an suv like IMASAP we put them on the roof just like them. Our Suv already had a luggage rack and we just needed to add inexpensive kayak holders to the factory rack. When we upgraded to a pickup without a rack, I started looking like you are. Yakima and Thule have different options available for pickups but they are high end and can be a considerable expense. . Most look similar the a ladder rack but, If you have an extended cab like chartrand you may be able to get a roof rack that mounts the same as it would on a regular car. It’s a pain to hoist them up that high and you’ll need a ladder to strap them in the cradles but it can be done. I started putting my 12’6” kayak inside my travel trailer. We have a 30’ TT so it fits down the center isle on its side with the slides in. I have to have the slides out to load and unload it but once it is inside I can bring them back in. I was even able to get two inside by stacking them and wrapping them in blankets. Not ideal if you want to get to the bathroom quickly or overnight in a Walmart parking lot but it will do. Once we get where we’re going and can drop the TT I strap them In the bed of the truck to get from the campsite to the water.

We mount ours like this as well, using a lumber rack and cradles. Didn't have a handy photo.

We had 2 tandem sit on tops. I had them on the cab and over the front of the truck. It was an OK setup, but I would find a better way.

Curious as to what brand/model roof rack you have. We have a Canyon crew cab and are pretty sure that this set up is what we need. Some require drilling in the roof, not my first choice.

I get people taking pics and asking questions about my “stack” often. I mounted my homemade pvc bike rack across my bedrails. Haul 4 kayaks and 4 bikes(3 in this pic).
I used to use a cheap ladder rack with 2x4s ubolted so I could haul 4 and still use my bed.

My rack is on a cap so reaching up from underneath isn't an option. I must be able to slide from the end.

The top two are very easy to ratchet strap, but I do it from underneath, inside bed.
The bottom two are a little trickier because they go close to the rear window. Also, getting the ratchet straps into my eye bolts on the front was a chore with that lifted truck.
I never had an issue hauling them upside down like that nor had issues with them canning or deforming. Did it that way for a few years.
