Progressive Industries EMS-HW50C considerations

About to pull the trigger on this as we are heading out next week for a couple week trip to Florida.

Question is around Using a Generator, I will be using a 1000 watt Honda (Just for keeping computers running while boon docking)

I will also be picking up a 3500 Harbor Freight predator model from my Dad while in Florida.

Once installed,
Will I be able to use generator power without issue? What precautions need to be taken?

Looks like at a minimum I will need a L5-30 to TT30 Adapter for the generator.... I already have the 30amp to 50amp adapters

You may not be able to plug the 1000 watt generator into the trailer shore power cord. Typically, the refrigerator circuit (even on AC) and the power converter when it is first powered up will draw more than 1000 watts. If so, the converter will "bog down" the generator and cause it to stall. You would be able to bypass the converter by turning that circuit breaker off (on the power distribution panel) but that would eliminate charging your batteries when on the small generator. Just something that you'll find out through "trial and error". We couldn't run our Cougar 27RKS on a 1000 watt generator.

As for the larger generator, I'm guessing you have 50 amp service in your trailer. If so you'll need a 50 to 30 amp reducer to connect your shore power cord to the generator's 30 amp RV outlet. If there's no 30 amp RV outlet (most do have them) then you'll also need an adapter to convert the plug to what fits the generator. Most RV stores have the necessary adapters in stock, so I wouldn't try to second guess it from a distance, just wait until you have the generator in front of you and you can more easily see exactly what you'll need.

Good info on the 1000 watt.... I was just going to borrow one for the quick trip (Till I hit my Dad's) I will test that this weekend and see how I fare.

I have the 50 to 30 and even 50 to 15 adapters..... But I will wait, like you said on if i need additional adapter for the larger inverter generator.

If you already have the Progressive unit installed, with the Honda generator, you will also need a bonding plug that will tie the ground and neutral together at the generator to prevent the Progressive EMS from rejecting power from the generator, or you can just put the EMS into Bypass mode. http://noshockzone.org/generator-gro...utral-bonding/

Testing with a Honda 1000 and I keep Getting E-5. L2 Voltage is showing 133.... L1=122....

When I measure at the generator with a meter, I'm getting 122 On both legs when connected to my 50amp-15amp adapter.....

Called them, They say it's designed to be run from shore power and not through a Generator

Running off Shore Power I get 118 / 121 and all is good.

So, I get back home, Plug into my 50amp Shore Power, and the Progressive is reading overvoltage (134, 131) and shutting off..... I meter the connection and get a pretty steady 124 on both legs....

Putting in call to progressive this am.

To each there own on these EMS protectors but I think I'll be keeping my plug in model, no gen issues and easy to use.
