Another new member from Colorado
Photo taken last fall in Rcky Mtns. Old truck and TT.
As you can tell from my Username I Dry Camp in the Rocky Mtns. Recently purchased 2016 Passport 3220bh 35' towed by 2016 GMC Sierra 2500HD. Previously owned a Coleman Lantern 20'. Anxiously waiting for the snowmelt to make maiden voyage to the Rocky Mtn back country. Will be a challenge with 35' travel trailer on some of the forest service roads but a little common sense and planning should be a great trip.

Welcome and congrats on your new trailer. I purchased your Passport's "cousin" model (a Bullet 308BHS) last year and the family loves it. Definitely a long coach for traversing those mountain roads. Be careful and safe. Have fun!

Rocky Mtn FS Roads
Thanks for your reply. Nice TT for your family. The forest service roads can be tricky even without towing TT. I usually drop the trailer at first spot that will work and then drive to desired location. Main concern would be the Beetle Killed trees blocking the road, those bad boys can give you a bad hair day. Of course, other issues would be road damage, washouts... Just need to be prepared... chainsaw, shovel, chains... No cell coverage where I enjoy camping so if emergency would arise I have Ham Radio to back me up.

From Conifer here. We just got our first TT, smaller than yours (195RB) and looking fwd to dry camping as well. I plan on easing into it until I get some experience. Plenty of good spots near here that I can recon with just the truck first, and not too far off the main roads. You've made me think harder about being prepared for unexpected road conditions though. If winter would only stop...

Good idea on the scouting first... I use a few resources first, Google Earth,Google Maps, Forest Maps. On camping day, depending on location, I always drop the camper and drive on..... camping site I enjoy is 11 miles off main road. Would hate to drive all the way in and find road blocked or camping space occupied.. Imagine trying to back up trailer on narrow winding road

Google maps and earth are definitely awesome resources. You can pretty much have choices picked from the comfort of your living room. Then cross your fingers that the pics are recent and no surprises. Having been back on those roads some with just the truck, there are spots way back that are great, but the washboard action gets old after a while. I imagine it's worse with a trailer in tow.

Google Earth in the area where I go was last updated Sep 2016 so quite recent. Believe you would be going slow enough pulling trailer so the washboards shouldn't be an issue. Most of the FS roads are rather narrow but there are areas to pull over in case of oncoming traffic. Most traffic I meet are the loggers and those boys are movin fast but they are careful. Just don't want to get in situation where you have to back up.

Welcome to the forum from Southern MD. My TT is only 32' and I can't imagine the challenge you'll have on those FS roads. Have fun and be safe.

welcome! We did our annual first campout of the year at Boyd Lake last weekend. Weather kept true to form and rained/snowed/snowed some more, but Sunday was nice!
