New member, New rig

My name is Jake and my wife and I just bought our first toy hauler but I've grown up camping with them for a long time. My parents owned a Weekend Warrior and I already knew what I wanted in a toy hauler prior to looking. Found a rig that fit both my need/wants as well as the wifes. We bought a Fuzion 4141 because the wife feel in love with the floor plan. Also bought a 2016 Dodge 3500 mega cab with the AISIN trans. Since buying them both I've been busy trying to track down the solution to a problem I've been having. At random when driving down the Ill get a message on the dash saying "check trailer wiring" and then it will go away. It will come on and off at random and sometime it will say "trailer brakes disconnected" and then it will reconnect. I've taken the trailer in to the dealer and they pulled the trailer with 2 different trucks and didn't have the issue. Took the truck into dodge and they couldn't find any issues with the plugs or trailer brake controller module which is the integrated system. No codes were on the computer indicating any errors. I've actually rewired the brakes wires running through the axles and ran them on top of the axle. The 7 pin plug on the trailer as been replaced. All the wiring has been checked. I've checked the pins on the plug in the bed of the truck which is factory and it looks fine. Used electrical grease on the 7 pin plug. Still nothing fixed. So today I pulled off all 6 tires and all 6 brake drums and on 2 of the drums i found that the clips holding the wires in the brake drums had come off where they clip on. So I pushed them back on and looked for any wearing on the wires but didn't find anything. I also noticed that the plug to the to the 7 pin connector on the rear bumper of the truck had some corrosion on it so i left it unplugged and now only have the connection in the bed of the truck. Drove the trailer around the neighborhood and the warning didn't show up. So hopefully the issue is fixed but then again it has gone a day or two without the message before.

I had the same thing with my Silverado. You may have fixed it as the brake control module is very sensitive and measures voltage changes to determine if connected or not. If it detects a short or drop, it reports it. So it's doing what it is supposed to do but it can drive you crazy. I finally fixed mine by buying a new truck. Welcome to the forum from Kansas City, MO! Enjoy your new rig. It looks great.

I have a 2014 Ram 3500 (looks just like the one in your pic) that I had the same problem. Needed a software update to take care of the problem. Dealer install the update and all was good.

Great looking setup. Welcoming me from Idaho. I'd clean those connections meticulously and apply a very light coat of dielectric grease to prevent future issues. Very light coat of that stuff will last all season.

Welcome to the forum from Southern MD. Nice looking color coordinated rig. A friend has a Ram with the built in Brake Controller and received the same message after his trailer was no longer connected. Reconnected and still had the issue. The Dodge dealer did a reflash of the SW/firmware and it seemed to fix the problem at least for now. Good luck. Let us know what you find.

Congrats on your new TH, and welcome to the TH family. You got a big girl there!! I Noticed you do not have a “just like a 3500” TV. Very nice rig and matched TV. These TH are extremely versatile! Enjoy

In regard to brake controller issue, as stated these new electrical systems are extremely sensitive to voltage and or current variation required to determine faults. Dirty/loose contacts would be enough but may not be detected with a normal continuity checker (Yes/No). Based on my understanding of what you have done I would think the bumper 7 pin connection is the culprit. As I understand when it was disconnected problem seemed to go away.

If I understand you correctly that is a “Y” adapter that can be replaced by the truck dealer. My truck was not prewired for the plug in the bed of the truck and if I recall correctly when the RV dealer installed the hitch all they did was disconnect the disconnect the plug connecting the brake controller to the bumper 7 pin receptacle, installed the “Y” section and reconnected the bumper receptacle and installed new plug in the bed. Just my guess, hopefully your found the problem and it is still working.

Be Safe and Happy Camping

Just an update on the trailer. I'm pretty sure that whatever I did fixed the problem. Haven't had the issue since pulling the drum covers and unplugging the 7pin from the rear bumper. Feels good knowing the problem is now gone. First trip with the trailer is planned for sand hollow UT this coming Wednesday.
