Slide Gutters and Slide Toppers

I will be installing slide toppers on our 5er here soon and am wondering about the existing slide gutters. Should these be removed or left in place?

On our two large slides there is approximately 4 inches from the slide top frame to the gutter and the one small (wardrobe) slide there maybe 2 or 2-1/2inches.

I'm thinking they could stay but would like to here replies from all that have experience installing these.

On our 2014 XLite, the dealer removed the factory installed slide gutters and replaced them with a slide gutter that also had the awning rail built into the extrusion. Once installed, it looks like it "came this way", the slide cover fits well and there's no extra holes from removing the old one and no extra pieces that look like they don't belong. I'm not sure how high the backing plate goes above the existing slide gutter, so you might not have any way to install the new awning rail above the existing gutter.

Actually John, I was thinking that the awning rail could go "Under" the existing gutter. I'm wondering now if I could find that type of Gutter/Awning Rail extrusion and replace the old like your dealer did. When I first looked at our trailer when delivered, I thought that the gutter had the rail in it as yours does. Seems like the way to go if I can buy it. Is yours black?

Ours is white, but I believe the extrusion is available in black, white, gray and anodized.

Here is a website with several different types of extrusions.
http://www.yellowdogextrusion.com/extmold01.htm

There are 3 or 4 different choices on that webpage.

My wife and I have been considering slide out covers/awnings as well. One of our concerns is new holes. Is it possible to get covers that install in the location of the gutters or would we need to leave the gutters. Not sure if the new kits have gutters built in.

I suppose I should head up to camping world to see what they have so I ca wrap my brain around this project.

Since my awning is black I had the dealer match it with the slide toppers.. Darn things look good.. hope the work as advertised, I'd hate to have to sweep these slides...

Did the dealer install new molding, extra molding or replace the gutters that were originally on your trailer when he installed the slide covers?

John, I'll get some photos of the mounting this weekend while we're camping.. No chance to get over to the storage lot before then.

Javi,

Thanks. I would post pictures of mine, but the trailer is in the pole barn, batteries out and that side of the trailer is up against the barn wall, so it's impossible (without moving things around and pulling the trailer out) to get any pictures.

I'm thinking that some pictures of existing slide installations would work wonders for those considering the addition, but I can't get to mine to post any.

Talked to one of my dealers service techs today and he stated that they do not remove the factory gutters as long as the space from top slide frame to gutter is meets the spec's of the brand of topper.

I was not able to get photos this past weekend as it was just flat too windy, cold and rainy to get out of the trailer... I did look at the mount and the rail is mounted under the slide gutter on all three of mine. So at least on this one the gutters were not removed.

Thanks Javi..... After looking at a few other trailers, this seems to be case most of the time.
