5-gallon Jerry Can

Does anyone carry extra gas with you while traveling for generators or just extra gas

extra fuel

Ater my trip to AZ last January and almost running the diesel dry looking for a station, I plan on tossing in an extra 50 miles worth just in case! Between Denver and Albuquerque NM we got to looking for diesel and when we finally got to a station, the fuel warning said "2 miles to empty" Closer than I ever want to be again.....

Carrying extra diesel is one thing, carrying extra gasoline in a jug sitting in the sun in the back of your truck (that's the only place I'd carry it) is a whole 'nother animal. Personallly I wouldn't!!!

If we needed fuel for any reason and it could not be obtained locally I would install a "quality" fuel cell in the truck bed or under the RV.

I totally (looking for the word) these new gas containers with the safety, Ha, Ha, spout that does not work, they leak, they … I won't invest in another one.

I have an external tank for my generator (6 gallon marine). It's my backup plan on long trips. I have a gas engine in the TV, but I could siphon it into the tank if I ran out. It should push me another 50 miles.

I don't/won't carry extra fuel in a gas/jerry can. Trying to transport it presents more problems than it solves. I will say on my last trip into the boonies I carried 6 5 gal. jerry cans to the site. All carried in a tag along truck not attached to my trailer (my CJ7 has to drink too)

On a regular trip I just start looking for fuel after about 2 1/2 hours driving. By then we both need to stretch anyway. Waited too long once and got down under a quarter and was feeling the pinch. Now I just start looking a little sooner.

Not usually worried about finding fuel during travel from point A to B. But, I do carry 5 gal of diesel (that's about 50 miles for us) for that just in case good feeling. Since adding solar, I don't worry too much about generator gas. Still carry the genny for repeated rain days and "just in case" needs. And 2.5 gal can of gas. With the genny tank full that's about 16 hours of run time or more than a week for us.
Had an occasion when traveling from Mexican Hat to Hanksville where the extra 5 of diesel came in handy
We just use the standard plastic cans from Walmart or Freddy's. Leave the vent loose so they can breath a little.

Not sure you would ever find a "quality fuel cell" for gasoline! We tried at work to find an under toolbox or some other type auxillary tank for a Ford V10 pickup with only a 26 gallon factory gas tank, which at 7-8 mpg didn't get you very far, none available, all had warnings "not for use with gasoline, diesel fuel only!".

Wow, never knew you could not use the aftermarket p/u tanks for gasoline. I know a lot of toy haulers have gasoline tanks for the toys.

Thanks

I have a short bed ford diesel so you lose about 9-10 gals of tank over the long bed so I carry a 5 gal of diesel just to make sure I don't get stuck somewhere. Only had to use it once but that convinced me to have it. The length and destination of trip determine if I take it with me or not. I also carry a 5 gal of gas for the generator when we will be without power at site. I have a bed cover that folds into thirds and I keep the fuel under the front portion when folded for the 5th wheel hookup. It keeps it out of the sun for the most part.

On our short bed Ram the space in front of the Anderson fits the 5gal cans just right. I just add a ratchet strap for peace of mind

I carry 5 gal fuel container with diesel strapped into place in the bed when going hunting. I purchased a normal spout on amazon. Most hunts, I use it in my or anothers truck to help get back to a station in a nearby town. I could be camped 30 to 50 miles from a paved road and further to town.

I wont carry extra gas beyond maybe a gallon. A gallon of gas under the right conditions can be the equivalent of several sticks of dynamite. Those conditions are seldom ever to be met while carrying a container in the back of a truck. But with that said, gasoline is way too inflammable for my liking.

When I had the '06 V10 F350, I spent a lot of time looking for an aux tank and about the only kind that I could find ended up being the race car types - and they weren't even accredited for road use. You can find those on the Summit or Jegs sites.

While most of the diesel tanks are legal for road use, I could find nary a reason that with proper precautions including a sealing 'roll over' vent and a sealing cap that they couldn't be used. I would be willing to bet others ae used these diesel tanks successfully for gasoline

Titan, I believe, does (or did!) make replacement gasoline tank with about a 50 gallon capacity. This fits in the original tank's position

Here is an interesting article about gasoline vapors and the dangers of gasoline near open flame. https://www.cnbc.com/2013/12/04/warn...explosion.html
I would be a little wary of transporting spare gasoline in a plastic container. I believe if I was planning on having this with me on a regular basis I would invest in a good quality steel jerry can. http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/2014180...23f734fffa363a

Jim - go one better for a safety can, but bring your full wallet. I carry diesel for my tractor in one of these Type 1 but in its previous life was used for boat gas. https://www.justrite.com/safety-cans...ontainers.html

Hi,

Since I extensively dry camp up in the mountains a long way from a gas station, I always carry 2 five gallon Jerry cans. I made a wooden box that will fit the 2 cans, a 1 gallon can of 2-cycle, a quart can of bar oil, and a can of 2-cycle mix.

My truck has a canopy on it so no worries about the direct sun heating the cans up.

Been doing it this way for at least 20 years.

I have on my Amazon wish list a "square" VP Racing Fuels 3512 jug 5gallon capacity. I've got a round one and they're a bit heavier duty than the typical WalMart jug. Also have a vent and old style spout. About $35.
I have carried 4 of the cheap 5 gallon jugs in the back of my truck. I use a 2x8 that fits in the slots of my truck bed. The jugs fit pretty good between that and the tailgate. Then I run a ratchet strap through the handles. I do this when I fish in Louisiana and buy non-ethanol gas there. It's potentially dangerous and I'm nervous about it until I get home.

Dave, those in your referenced site are the exact cans I sent with my men when OSHA hung around projects regularly. I bought them at Grainger and paid through the nose. Your site has a reasonable price.....and a better deal and can than the one I referenced.

I don't like transporting gas in a plastic 5 gal container the 2 miles from the station to my house for the lawn equipment. There's a reason that NASCAR and every racing sanctioning body requires fuel cells. For the average guy the D.O.T. approved gas cans are cost prohibitive. For me, carrying a molotov cocktail in the bed of my truck is not worth the risk.
