Not to hijack this thread... but what’s the most important number to look at? Went to cat scales yesterday, and when I add my family I’m about 550-600lbs over payload, but I’m about 2000lbs under GCWR. I’m well under the axle ratings. I tow about an 8800lb 5th wheel with a Ram 2500 5.7 hemi

All of the numbers are important. They each are as important as the other. I was 200 over payload on my last truck (1 year old) and bought a new one because of it.

What is the payload on your truck? Pin weight? My 6.4 has a payload of right at 3200 lbs. Sounds like you may be carrying a lot of "stuff".

Another thought would be; how's that 5.7 do with that trailer? I had one pulling a trailer about the same weight and it worked its little heart out. Hopefully you have at least a 3.92 rear end. Maybe that's just enough to tip the scales for a new truck?

Ha new truck is not an option. Keep in mind we are in Alabama, We don’t hit a lot of mountains, we are weekend warriors and occasional week long vacationers. My truck handles trailer fine, very little squat in the back. We have a trip planned to Walt Disney world in February, that’s going to be a good test, 9 hour drive. Payload is 2300lbs, 3.73 gears

Wow! 2300 payload explains the payload dilemma. What year is the truck?

Personally I wouldn't feel comfortable being that far over payload as I've mentioned. If truck replacement is out of the question you will have to make a decision. If you go with the rig you need to do everything you can to mitigate any negative ramifications of being overweight. A 9 hr. trip, with kids I assume, to Disney World is going to be trying just by itself.

Some will say that payload is meaningless; obviously I disagree. I don't know the specifics of your vehicle but you might look at beefing up the springs, add air bags to relieve some strain on the suspension.....?? Good luck.

Air bags and compressor being installed Wednesday. I don’t have a lot of squat in the back. I had a 6,000lb travel trailer before this 5th wheel and there’s not much difference in performance

OK , I find a 2015 F350 long box diesel with a cargo of 3700lbs. I look up the details by the VIN and I get a 12000lb max towing capacity. A GCWR of 19000lbs. This makes it look like I am still short on towing for a 13000 GVWR 5'r. Am I seeing this correctly?

Talk2cpu, you are probably looking at the bumper pull spec's, not the goose neck or 5ver capacity. Relax, you'll be okay.

Great news, bought a truck. Yep, with all your help I bought the 2015 F350, crew, long box, diesel, Platinum. With a lot of searching and assistance by the dealer we pinned down the towing at 15,000 lbs. Cargo is a bit light at 3288, more than adequate as long as we don't add too many heavy toys in the truck. Now the search begins to locate the trailer have picked out.

Thanks for all the great advice and direction.

Thomas, congrats on the new vehicle. I know from experience that moving to a new, bigger truck is a big decision. I am happy for you and wish you the best finding the best trailer that fits you and your family. Happy Camping!
