New Cougar 5er owner

Hey boys and girls. The wife and I have pulled the trigger on a 2016 Cougar 339BHS 5er. I've always found message boards to be full of great information as well as good people (most of the time!)

We have a 2-year-old and are looking forward to getting out and about FL in this thing for a while before thinking of venturing out of state very far.

I currently have a 2005 F-250 diesel that I've owned for over 11 years for the tow vehicle. She'll be over GVWR here and there but it will have plenty of power to yank it around and stop it. I have gotten around to installing the Reese Signature under-bed rails for the hitch I picked up out of classifieds for it. I'll hopefully have it done this weekend sometime so I can hook it up and see how it sits and such.

We're excited to get it out and in the mean time have been at the storage facility some familiarizing ourselves with the unit and making a list of items we need to get before heading out on the first trip.

Welcome to the forum!!

Congrats on your new to you fiver. Lots of good people and great information here.

Welcome forum isn't the right place to discuss GVWR but "here and there" isn't good.

I won't say you're wrong there. No bother to me bringing up the GVWR thing in this thread if it's not to you. As you may know, the F-250's GVWR is usually 10,000 lbs like mine is. The truck with full fuel and the little wife, little boy, and hitch is probably (still have yet to hit the scales) 8,000 lbs or so. The empty pin weight on my unit is 1,815 lb. You can see that there isn't much wiggle room. Most 5er's I looked at have similar pin weights and vary on the pin weight ratio. This makes the F-250 fairly unsuitable for 5er's in general, on paper. My truck can take over 3,300 more lbs of weight over the rear axle as it sits empty. The axle and tires cannot be overloaded with my setup, not even close. But the GVWR is easily exceeded. It would be nice to have a dually or even an F-350 but I've had this truck for a long time, it's treated me excellent, and I don't need another payment for a new truck on top of the RV payment. I may have to install some air bags if things sit down a little hard in the back but I'll just have to see how it sits once hooked up.
