Hey everybody

New owner of a 2023 Cougar 290RLS. I'm towing with a 2019 Ford F250 6.2 L gas truck. I'm new to fifth wheel but not to Rving. I've been Rving for 8 years now and have owned 2 travel trailers, a Class A and now a fifth wheel.

Congratulations and Welcome from New Jersey, I've had my 5th wheel for over a year now. Totally different towing. I think you will enjoy it.

How does the F250 gasser do pulling the Cougar?

It pulls just fine. My Cougar only weighs a little over 10,000 lbs dry. The F250 gasser can pull 15,000 lbs and have a payload of about 4,300 lbs. My hitch weight is about 1800-1900 lbs. I wouldn't want to pull anything larger than this though.

Congrats on the new 5th wheel. I hate to throw this out but you mentioned you are new to 5th wheels and some of your comments seem to indicate you are going by brochure stats on the truck and trailer both.

Here is a link to the Ford Super Duty capacities. Please note page 5. Just looking at a F250, 6.2L, crew cab, 4x4, SWB and 9900lb. payload it shows a max payload of 3380lbs. Depending on trim level that will go down as I suspect it did. Look inside the driver door for the yellow/white sticker that has the payload (carrying capacity).....maybe 3000-3100?

https://media.ford.com/content/dam/f...Super-Duty.pdf

The trailer is 10,124lbs. dry and was never that weight again after batteries and propane was added - then you add all your stuff. The safest way to guesstimate without scaling is to use 22-23% of the gvwr which is 12,200lbs. 12,200 x .22 = 2684lbs. So approximating a payload of 3100 then deducting 2684 = 416lbs. excess payload over the weight of the trailer in the bed. That 416lbs. has to include the people, pets, gear etc. in the cab plus the hitch and anything else that goes in the bed of the truck. You will more than likely run out of payload.

https://www.keystonerv.com/product/c...orplans/290RLS

The numbers in brochures, advertisements, towing capacity, dry weights are simply sales tools for use on the unsuspecting and are meaningless. Look at that sticker in the door and see where you are at. Hopefully it's 4300lbs....but it won't be. Good luck.

You are absolutely correct the payload is 3223 lbs. Yes I stated I'm new to fifth wheels but not to towing. I've done my research and ran my calculations and I feel comfortable with my towing. Sorry for the wrong info MattE303. Thanks for throwing that out, be Blessed and happy trails!

No worries, I was really more interested in how the 6.2 gas engine pulled your trailer than anything to do with weights or payload. Our trailer is just under 14K fully loaded for a trip and I've been wondering how the new 7.3 Godzilla gasser would pull it.

My buddy has a 2023 F250 7.3 Godzilla SRW crew cab, 4398 payload, 21400 towing capacity. He has a 2022 Montana High Country 351BH. He's said his max on the trailer was 16,000 lbs. Pulls it with no problem.

MattE303 I typed that late last night, just read over it, it's a F350 not F250! Hope this didn't lead you wrong, bottom line is the 7.3 seems to pull just fine., he's happy with it.
