Picking up Fifth Wheel tomorrow

Hi,
We can’t wait to pickup our 2023 Keystone Cougar 316RLS which we will tow with a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD Z71. We had a 2011 Dutchman Denali travel trailer that we’ve been camping in for 12 years and we loved every minute of it, but it was time for bigger RV. Retirement is so close we can smell it and for us this means we are hitting the road.

Congratulations, that is a nice unit.

As a word of caution, I would suggest double-checking your weights once you get loaded and head out on your first trip. Your pin weight is likely to be approaching 2,800 lbs. which is probably very close to your truck’s cargo capacity…….

Welcome to the forums and congrats on your selection of a Keystone Cougar. Cougars are a popular brand and they are everywhere. Lots of people are very happy with them. Enjoy the new "home" and happy camping!

Thank you so much for the word of caution, but our new 2500 has the springs & axles of the 3500. I attached our tag from inside the door, we’ve had several people look over our numbers and they all agree we are good. Please let me know if you disagree. Thanks again for the caution.

Max tongue weight gave you 150 lbs over the payload meaning you will need to sit in that truck basically naked and not carry anything in the truck (such as passengers) and maintain a strict diet to stay under 150 lbs. I haven't weighed 150 lbs since the 9th grade!

That is a pretty good payload for a 3/4 ton. My sister's Ram 3/4 ton has all the geegaws and payload is a shade under 2000 lbs.

OPs 2500 must have a gas engine for that payload.

Chevy/GM raised the gvwr of their 2500 diesel engine pickups….looks like they add the extra weight of the diesel engine to the standard 10000 gvwr to come up with the phantom, missing payload that 3/4 ton diesel trucks are saddled with.If you look at the payload sticker from post #5 you can see the 11000 + gvwr…i think that happened in 2020,i noticed it when truck shopping back then

So fast to jump when you see 2500/250, well in about 2020 both Ford and GM increased the GVWR of their 2500/250 trucks. It doesn’t mater if gas or diesel, they increased past the class 2 10,000# top end.
So this “3/4 ton” now has a GVWR of some current “One Ton” SRW short beds.
The OP is getting a 5th wheel with a GVWR od 12,300# he might get to 2,700# pin, but 1,900# pin dry and a 1,738# payload means half the payload would need to be added to the pin.
The OP should be just fine with that 5th wheel unless he is an anvil salesman!

To the OP welcome to the forum, some members get a bit worried when 2500 and 5th wheel are mentioned in the same post.

No it is a diesel engine. Check out the max towing package in the 2024 Chevrolet 2500HD trucks.

Yep, it seems some members are still stuck using weight information of trucks from 15 years ago.
The latest GM 2500 diesel trucks have a higher GVWR and more available payload than my previous Generation 2500 Gas truck.

With his 3399 LBS payload, he will be fine with the trailer he listed.

Did I jump Russ? I was remarking on the fact that that the OP's truck allotted 150 lbs to a driver and never made a negative comment regarding his ability to tow with that truck. You seem to be very defensive about an innocent remark.

My sister's diesel Ram 2500 Laramie is a 2018 I believe... stuck in 15 years ago? I don't know or care about the "latest" GM trucks and all 3/4 ton trucks are not the same.... just pointing that out to someone as I have been around to remember 15 years ago, 30 years ago, 50 years ago, etc.

Can you explain how you are coming up with that 150 LBS?

What am I missing?

Truck Max Payload Available: 3399 LBS
Truck Max Tongue Weight Allowed: 3240 LBS

No way is the 5th wheel he is describing coming close to exceeding those numbers.

You don't know or care about the "latest" GM trucks, but yet that is what the OP listed he has.
Your sister's diesel Ram 2500 is irrelevant in this conversation.

I'm thinking not "stuck" using weight info from 15 years ago. Those numbers are still relevant in many, many (probably most) trucks. GM just started "massaging" those numbers in the last year or so on their trucks and unless a poster actually shows his truck numbers the only ones to go by are historicals. So no, not stuck in the past, just using realistic numbers based on history when someone doesn't give specifics.

To me the reference to the 150# drive allowance is inferring not enough truck.
The OP’s truck has the same GVWR, of many 350/3500’s SRW short bed and some long bed back less than five years ago.
