I don't lube either, but do use a dry silicone spray a few times a year on everything.

I'm in the lube-it-up camp and as a side benefit the grease helps the ball slide into the coupler if you haven't gotten it exactly centered underneath... which is about 99% of the time. I've used a black rubber ball cover (stolen) and now use a plastic sandwich bag cinched with a rubber band to keep grease off the pants. Not sexy, just cheap and functional.
As for "no lube means no debris", the little metal flakes created during every turn in the road by the friction of xxx pounds of downward pressure would qualify as debris. Then you have bare metal in the coupler which means rust at some point.
