Water heater ANODE ROD

Does anyone have trouble like I do replacing the anode rod? Every year I remove the rod to flush the tank and inspect the rod. And every time I try to put it back in, I struggle to get the threads to catch whether it be the same rod or a new one. Does anyone have a trick for this simple task?

Thank you

Use one finger on the bottom of the anode rod to help "lever it up" so the threads will catch. Essentially, it's "top heavy" and when inserted into the fitting, gravity pulls it down making the threads "nearly impossible" to align. I find that one finger on the bottom, pushing in, will help lift the inside part and make it easier to get the threads started. Be sure to use Teflon tape on the threads to help keep them from binding. It makes the anode easier to remove "next time".....

John has the right approach. I prefer white thread sealant, you have to pay attention to which direction to wind the tape. Makes it idiot ( tech) proof LOL.

I always used a pair of pliers to hold it square til I got a couple threads started, worked every time for me.

My burner tube is very close to it and I can't hardly get my fingers on it. Patience and perseverance is my only solution. BTW, remember to relieve the pressure in the tank before removing the rod.....not like I did something like that.....oops.

Yep, I just put mine back in Sunday. Took a few tries but I eventually got it.

I like to use a socket with extension attached, the extension allows me to exert a little downward force while turning the rod to start the threads....

^^^ also I put a small piece of rag in the socket to hold the anode tight in the socket. Use a shallow socket.
