Airbags..smoother ride?

Do airbags help smooth things out any? My rig/trailer tow beautifully 95% of the time. Its only on the real rough expansion joints/etc that I can get a bit of bounce in it. It settles pretty quickly with the Bilstein 4600s I have. Was thinking airbags may help that a bit more?

In my experience with airbags aka having Firestone's & currently Loadlifter Ultimate 5000's...it does not smooth out the ride per say but does help with the pogo-ing effect/bounce you may be experiencing. In addition to leveling the tongue weight of the trailer vs truck squat.
I absolutely swear by them. Click image for larger version

Don't have them, but when I was considering them, most places I read said no.

That trailer is almost 9600 gvw. Air bags won't "smooth" the ride per se, and can actually make it rough if you don't air them down when empty. They will however stop some of the pogo stick effect you'll get with a 1/2 ton pulling that much trailer. The Bilsteins are a good call and the airbags would be another one IMO.

I use both, I have the 5100's, and the load lifter ultimate 5000's. I think the 1000's would have worked. I add about 25lbs when towing and leave at 5lbs when not. I don't pogo the way I did with oem shocks.

Yeah, she's a big ol' girl. I've got it set up really well with my WD hitch. Tows wonderfully. Here are my weights

FA -3360
RA -3780
Trailer -6960
Total -14100

This is loaded with gear and passengers as well.

I may have to look at the 1000s just for that little extra

I would encourage you to put the air bags on. I tow a trailer about that size and did with a 1/2 ton. You don't know what you don't know but when you hit stretches as we did in Shreveport and Jackson MS I thought we would be thrown out of the truck due to the horrific bouncing - inside the trailer doors open, stuff strewn about and the sliding door to the bathroom completely tore out the track, strap an end of the facia. Next trip with airbags, and about 50mph (previously I had to slow to 45mph) we felt more secure and the door remained in place. Now, with HD truck, no bounce, no airbags, no loose stuff inside, no anything....just "peace of mind".
