This subject rears its head every few months and helps to put things in perspective where others are concerned. I'm probably a little less opinionated on this particular subject than a few other members. I would not venture the idea that 600 miles per day is dangerous for example. That would totally depend on the situation, for example age, equipment, highways, etc.
We have been in most situations described so far, having been a business owner, family man, living a thousand miles from both sets of parents, etc.
Also being of the 'old fart's club,' we find that about 300 per day generally meets our needs with an occasional 250 or 400. Most of us do what our daily needs require.
As tempted as I am to voice an hour-long diatribe concerning the Iron Butt Club, most of you who are familiar with my posts already know what that might be!

Miles per day

I like to do 3-4 hours at the most. We have four bladders on board (the two of us and two dogs)- 3 senior bladders and a young strappin’ buck. Our bladders are rarely in sync. Sometimes a 4 hour trip (by mileage) takes us 6 hours. We stop a lot and look a lot. We like to get off the bypass and drive down Main Street a lot.

Just wanted to say I appreciate and respect everyone’s responses, necessity or just choice to maximize our time in the area we are visiting is what drives my apparently lofty goals, unfortunately the daily grind is like pulling teeth to get time off and I figured 12 days 6 travel and 6 stationary sightseeing on two wheels all within a 75 to 100 mile radius well it’s just what we do lol only other long trip we’ve done was the New England area and that was a tug straight after work till oh around midnight hour give or take a few (in some nasty down pours, generally rainy day) and finished the next day, long story short two days up and two days back and spent more time and miles visiting all the states than trip up and back, exhausting, figure this time not quite quite three times as far we are keeping this sightseeing area much smaller so we can actually enjoy camper and campground while we are there.

Just a follow up and add to last post I would be lying if I said I wasn’t a tad envious of you all who have made it to that mythical time called retirement and still have your health and obvious love of rving, we are still dreaming of a time when we can see this country at a much slower pace few days here move on day or so and a few days there and wherever we park is home but until that day comes I wish all of you safe journeys, thanks again for great responses.

I think you've gotten a good picture of both up and down sides of long travel days. I like to do 2 long travel days in a row to put me within a 3 to 4 hour distance of my goal. That way I can sleep later, pull out slower and still be at destination early in the day to set up.

If you wear yourself out, you're no fun to be with until you get recovered.

Just returned from a 7600 mi trip with our 5th wheel. Daily mileage ranged from 0 mi to just over 800 mi. The 800 mi day was during the trip home when we decided we'd been gone long enough and wanted to be home. Left West Glacier on Sun morning and was home in west Mi Tues afternoon. I always say I take after my maternal grand-father as he was a bus driver and did long miles back in the 50's. His bus-mans holiday was driving his 49 Studebaker from Kalamazoo Mi. to L.A. in 3-4 days on Rte 66. I can still hear grandma complaining "He never stops!" So being a Iron Butt member comes naturally. For the record I'm 75

If I am buy myself (wife coming later in her car) then if I am trying to do it in one day I will drive up to 12 hours, if it is out of the one day range probably 8-10 hours a day.

if the wife is with me, then I try to limit the drive time to 6 hours a day.

I could go 700 miles befor needing fuel but I would have to go leak and stretch every couple hours with construction and concrete baracades alone with traffic merging wears me out . Eleamate that proubley 400 miles . I like rural driving and have found on this trip I don't get any further useing interstate and I was more beat up driving interstate at 67 mph when the traffic was good.

I shoot for between 200-300 miles a day. I have found, especially with my kids, it’s better to break up long trips into multiple days. We try to get into camp early enough so the kids can swim and what not.

When my daughters were young I would often leave late so they slept through most of the trip on the way out. On the way home they were usually tired and napped or talked about the trip.

I would just clarify on the "600 mi. per day" towing an RV being dangerous vs the stipulation for commercial drivers:

11-Hour Driving Limit
During the 14-consecutive-hour period explained above, you are only allowed to drive your truck for up to 11 total hours. A driver may drive a total of 11 hours during the 14-hour period, however, driving is not permitted if more than 8 hours have passed since the end of the driver’s last off-duty or sleeper-berth period of at least 30 minutes. Once you have driven a total of 11 hours, you have reached the driving limit and must be off duty for another 10 consecutive hours (or equivalent) before driving your truck again.

Granted, this is for "commercial" drivers which I assume are much more conditioned and used to long hauls. I'm just saying "Joe and Beth", jumping in their truck to pull a 15k trailer across the country at 65 mph for 12 hours per day is in fact dangerous....and would be specifically prohibited if they were commercial drivers....because it is. Note the down time; not something the "in a hurry" rv tower wants to follow. It's there because you're not in a Prius driving down the highway; you've got a load behind you that can kill others if/when you get tired and "aren't your best". JMO/YMMV I'm sure.

My wife and I "plan" to leave the yard on whatever date seems reasonable, and from there on it's variable. I guess we are fortunate in that we have lots of time. My wife is fully retired, and I still work Spring and Fall on a big farm. Basically I have June and July to travel. I couldn't pin down how many miles a day we go, as it varies widely.

I do work long hours, but that only applies to paying jobs. . I love running those beautiful big tractors and combines, so it is a pleasure.

I think it's more a personal preference and ability. As Clint said, "A man's got to know his limitations."

Sourdough thanks for laying down the letter of the law and your obvious passion for safety, from above quoting myself, even my thinking was 600 mile days would be long even in the possible realm of impossible between the hours of daylight and dusk, I may be a dangerous man when called upon to be, but do not take endangering other lives lightly or equipment for that matter, that being said we will travel as far as possible as safe and comfortable in the planned daylight hours we have regardless of mileage it’s what we do anyway, thanks again for all the responses and feedback much appreciated.

I'm not retired yet so for planning a long trip, I use 500 miles/day. Average 50 mph with stops so 10 hours. With no time zone changes, on the road by 8 and at the next stop by 6 ready to take supper. I've done a 850 mile once, but as someone else posted, it was on the way home from a several week trip and either stop for a short ride the next day, or push to get home. Of course I was 25 yrs younger and pulling a pop-up with a full size conversion van so was pretty comfortable for the family.

Once I'm retired, I'm liking the 250 miles per day plan!

If I were retired a slower pace would be in order, but I'm not. We're destination vacationers. Gotta get there, wherever "there" is. That said im a commercial truck driver and 500 miles towing heavy is a day at the office. My wife also drives, almost as good as me to the point where I don't worry about her. Also no kids. So anywhere from 700 to 1000 miles if that's what it takes. And we have 48 gallons of fuel. But I would say 5-600 miles max would wear out the average rv'er. There's a lot to consider, mostly stops, stops will kill you're time. If you have a small gas tank or kids you're stopping every 3 hours or less. I would plan for 4-500 miles and adjust accordingly for your own situation

I should add if your'e traveling on a weekend in the summer all bets are off. You could easily lose a couple hours to construction and traffic jams. I work nights so diving all night is preferred for me.

Larry you pretty much nailed it, we are roughly 10 years from retirement training and no kids or pets plus we likewise split the driving task on open interstates and freeways I usually do the brunt of heavy lifting when traffic gets heavy and around bigger cities but thankfully we travel well together, I’m guessing we can range between 250 and 300 between fill ups, realistically I know that will be considerably less through mountainous areas and I don’t like to dip below 1/4 tank area, thanks for input every trip we take is an adventure so far they have all been drama free.

Traveling and waiting for 1/4 tank can be a problem in some areas, especially with a gasser. I begin with 80 gallon of diesel and generally plan to fill with about 20 gallon or 200 miles.

Dave, I run the 6.4 and 3.73. I start looking as soon as the needle sits square on 1/2 unless I know the road. I have hit situations where I've been well under a 1/4 by the time a found a station that would accommodate our rig. Once I passed a lonely little station in the middle of MS thinking there would be something soon; I finally found a station when the truck said I had 60 miles to empty. I don't like being that intense...and you have a 4.10!
