Average daily miles on trip

Hello all, I know everyone tows at their own pace as I do I max out around 65 on highways regardless of posted limits and me and the better half are going on our longest so far and looking for input on daily mileage before cutting off, I’m thinking 600 mile days will be long with gas/food stops and I’m not big on night driving just curious about some of you more experienced long haulers what your average days are and if my goals are to lofty to actually be parked for the night with a full belly by dark lol.

Dave,
I'm not sure how old you are, but I have found that the older I get (currently 65), the less hours I can tow a camper each day. In my younger days I would plot out our trips, thinking that I could easily go 500+ miles per day. Day 1, okay but beat. Day 2, 450 miles and mildly irritable, day 3 - 400 miles and cranky, day 4 - 350 miles and a PITA. You get the picture. Towing for many hours, along with the mental concentration involved, takes its toll.

I should add that I was the only one driving, and now I plan my trips around a maximum of 6 hours per day (including gas stops).

I have found that I use the first day as a travel day, drive as long as I can, get up early settle at camp as early as they will let me in. I use google and allstays to help with stopping points along the way in case I don't want to keep going.
There are also times I just want to get there or home. Case in point I drove almost 600 miles from Boston to Aurora, Ontario straight. Took 12 hours, incl. pee / gas breaks, and a sit down meal in Watertown NY. I am however a young whippersnapper of 55. I also love to drive. Felt good to be in my bed at home and enjoy the free day at home before work the next day.
Everyone is different.

Wow - 600 mile days. Guess I could see that if still working, but those days are long gone. I shoot for 250 per day (max 300). Not in a hurry now that I’m retired. DW drives half the time, so it makes for easy days. Don’t have to pull chocks too early in the morning and are in camp for happy hour. Also do not like one night stops, so I plan on two nights min.

I tow between 5-6 hours max. At 61 any longer just wears me out.

I try and keep it under 500 miles depending on the total miles we need to go. Time is not a big factor since I completed retirement training. Usually I'm looking at fuel stops. First stop along the way second stop where we plan to overnight. Just seems to work out for us.DW has no interest in driving with the Cougar so it's all about how much time in the saddle I can handle. At about 250 miles or so and I'm ready for stretch. We don't drive fast so roughly 7 to 8 hours with breaks makes it a day for us.

IMO 600 mile days are not only dangerous towing an RV but you just miss everything. As Doc said, I don't know your age, and it's really irrelevant, when speaking of 600 mile days towing a larger RV as far as I'm concerned it's out of the question - you're talking about 12 hours of towing minimum, then setup, breakdown, eating, potty breaks....why?

We drive on hours; 7 - 8 hours is a long day; about 6 is good; 5 nice; then when moving into a new permanent site (last day arriving - for a month or more), I like no more than 4 getting there. I use googlemaps and plot the course. Whatever time it says I add an hour at least. Some days, depending on what is going on, we may not go more than 2-3 hours so we can see new stuff.

Your thought of getting max miles per day is exactly what I always did when I was young and missed every single thing that was interesting because I was interested in getting from A to B as fast as possible - I just forgot about all the things in between. Now, we try to make up for that. Might as well do it right the first time....?

I have found that traveling at 65 MPH max I actually average 50 MPH taking into account rest stops and fuel stops, so 300 miles works out to about 6 hours total time. YMMV

Definitely get that picture especially the concentration and from other responses I may be shooting high I’m also figuring out that my uh young 53 year old butt might be in the minority of people on here still slaving away at paying for all these exhausting but fun trips, totally worth it though!

My goal is 350 - 400. I'm 71 so those 600-800 mile days are done. Two years ago I did 780 and was shot the next day. 350 is comfortable with a couple quick stops. Auxiliary tank means fuel is only required at 700-800 miles.

Well that’s a kick in the.......I’m getting the impression that several of you all are retired and limited vacation time has lost relevance lol I’m limited unfortunately so have the choice of pushing long days or spending vacations pretty much traveling the entire time or staying close to home and there’s zero fun and adventure in that, I do appreciate all the responses and may do some re evaluating but my average day starts at 4 AM and doesn’t end till 10 for a work day so 8 to 10 hrs of windshield time seemed reasonable.

Depends. I find it still an easy 11.5 hour trip to see my brother NOT pulling a 15k 5er. I'll stick to a goal of 350-400 miles pulling. Max speed pulling is 65 and 75 without the 5er. Don't need too let off to gain space between the crazy that pulled in front of me without the 5er.

While towing if you average 50-55 miles per hour your making fairly good time. With that your looking at 12 hours give/take to do 600 miles depending on fuel/potty stops.
I'm in the "old fart retired club" as well & 5-6 hours = 200-300 miles is a very long day on my cheeks & nerves.
I do remember those vacations when we were much younger that DW & I swapped driving, not towing, for 25-30 hours, eating while driving & very quick fuel & restroom breaks, to get to the "spot" & do the same returning home & will NEVER EVER do that again.

I will say that if you're working and trying to use an RV it is very difficult to maximize the use of the RV, see and do all the things you hope to and then think you got the most out of the trip. Hard to do.

If you're working, have limited time, have an RV and want to travel, IMO, pick locations that you can hit reasonably and enjoy the location...and the trip. Having done it more times than I can count, running full tilt from A to B because you wanted to make a longer trip, spending 2 days at "that location" while missing everything else in between is sort of missing a lot...with an RV. I say that having done it so much in the past that I can't for a second 2nd guess your decisions - just what we've learned as time has passed. I wish you the best in your decision and fully understand trying to get "there" to do/see; I did it for decades. Trying to do what people that are retired do is impossible for working folks. Best wishes.

Sorry, I didn't see this. "Iron butt club"? I'm not sure what that is - maybe I'm "too old"? . As far as hitting and gitting it, in my working life I was up at 4:30am, hit the road about 6am, in the office before 7am, had my employees on a daily conference call at 7am, did my thing and went where I needed to be usually ending the day about 8-10pm...but that is a lost art anymore best I can tell. 100k a year and loved it; so no, I don't frown on the "iron butt club"...btdt.

My observations were from a retired person, and, if you read my next post, I understand "working" people; I did for almost 50 years and don't/would not post anything cutting down folks that have "been there/done that" because you still have to do it. We all have to pay our dues if you want anything meaningful in the end and those that have "done it" already know your predicament. I wish the best for you.

Absolutely agree. 300 mile days are reasonably big days for us. We try to keep it in the 250-260 range when possible.

Like CBrez said, Not too early a start and then we're camped up in daylight and have the feet up with an adult beverage before the sun goes down.
We're here for a good time, not a long time.
