2nd A/C - Dometic Penguin II

Installed a 2nd (13.5k) air conditioner in the living room. It was easy except removing the old caulking from vent (took 2 hours)! It makes such a dramatic difference - worth every penny!!! Used the penguin II air distribution unit too. BTW it comes with a gasket so you don't need to buy one.

Mfg Part #: 640315CXX1J0 Penguin II 13,500 BTU Air Conditioner, Black
Mfg Part #: 3310741.016 Penguin II Air Distribution Box – Non duct, Manual Control

What did you use to get the unit up onto the roof?

I saw a YouTube where the guy slid it still in the box up an extension ladder to the roof, but that's to risky for me. I'd like to install a 2nd unit on our Sprinter and my only hesitation is a good way of getting it up on the roof.

I helped a friend install a 15k unit on his Prowler. The old unit went bad. We got it stabilized on top of a ladder. He climbed on roof, while I held it. He grabbed part of it and I helped lift from the bottom. Not too difficult, but you need two capable people.

I used the tractor and front loader. I realize not everyone has that option available but I would not risk getting hurt or ruining a new A/C unit. The cost of a dealer or RV Service Dept. installing it is much cheaper than a life threatening injury. JMYHO!!

Does the entire roof vent frame need to be removed when installing the Dometic B57915 or can it be installed over it? Big difference in time if the old vent needs to be completely removed. Thanks in advance!

I put my truck bed right next to the trailer and lowered the front landing gear all the way down and we got in the bed and picked it up overhead and pushed the unopened box right up on the roof. You just need to be able to handle the 100lbs.

YES - the entire vent, trim and caulking MUST be removed for any air conditioner install or it WILL leak.

Some photos. 90% of the caulking is off so the white you see is just clean roof.

Thanks for the info. My nieghbor has a large Case skidsteer maybe he can get up close to roof level, especially if i do the lowered front jacks trick.

The black frame over the hole in the picture...does that get sealant like the old roof vent or how do you make it watertight?

KOZKO - thanks for the insight. I went up and removed the vent cover tonight and it definitely sticks up too high.

Thanks again!

No new sealant required. The black frame is on the inside and the A/C unit came with a thick/dense foam gasket already attached. Once you clean up all of the old caulking all you have to do is set the air conditioning down, square it up and tighten the three bolt bracket assembly from the inside. You’re supposed to tighten the assembly down to squash the gasket to a 1/2 inch - it starts at about 1 inch.
