That's what it is intended to do.
Most modern LEDs have a voltage regulator built in and are not polarity dependent.

It looks to me like a metal insulated cable clamp fastened to the frame and the cable is running through the insulated part of the clamp. Need a better picture

The voltage regulator does not change polarity. It regulates voltage so as not to burn the diode.

I didn't say the voltage regulator changed the polarity.

Sorry, that was a misstatement on my part.
A diode by its design can only work in one direction. It is polarity dependent, and it will not allow current to go in the opposite direction. That's exactly what it's made to do. A resistor is used, or a voltage regulator, to keep from burning the diode.

From the beginning of this thread, I knew in my heart there would be a logical explanation, but I had to follow the thread to see how we got there.
Now looking back at the photos, it's clear that is an insulated p clamp, but I truly didn't see it at first.

ddoug, your exercise reminds me of so many times I've spent ridiculous amounts of time chasing down something I just wasn't seeing right.

If anyone here says they haven't done this, they are lying.

Never say never. Old cars and other vehicles such as tractors used positive ground systems for many years. https://www.restore-an-old-car.com/p...ound-cars.html
