A light coat will prevent rust when not in use. If you determine squeak from the ball and hitch grease might help.
Many don’t grease or put WD40 on it because of the mess you get on your hands, your pants or your wife who will be happy!

A little squeak isn’t bad or require attention.
Too tight or binding is an issue tgat requires attention and grease won’t solve.

Yes. Also wipe it off along with dirt that gets worked into it.

Wax paper

Tear off a strip of wax paper and attach it to the ball. Leaves a small, easy to wipe clean, wax film.

We use bearing grease, when pulling a TT.

Back when I pulled a small trailer with a motorcycle, I used wax paper. I carried this practice over to my bigger trailers of today. A nice clean ball and no mess to deal with.

I used a candle or paraffin wax used for canning, much less mess than grease. A box of the paraffin wax has lasted about 15 years.
I also used it on door latches & slam latches throughout the house & rv.
