Parks in the U.P.

We are going to the U.P. of Michigan in July. I had a hard time finding campgrounds with full hookups. Does anyone have suggestions for camps in the northeast side of the U.P.?

There are several really nice RV parks in the UP that have a limited amount of full hookups. Most, however do not (I think it has a lot to do with frozen ground during the harsh winters up here) You might want to consider Tourist Park in Marquette, Tourist Park or Wondering Wheels in Munising, KOA in Newberry, Tiki RV Park in St Ignace. Those are just a few to get you started. Be careful with Gitche Gumee RV Park between Marquette and Munising, there's some bad stories in some of the reviews out of there on the web. There's several around Escanaba, Manistee, and Gwinn. Most are very small privately owned "summer ventures" where the owner doesn't want to put the investment install a sewer system. Almost every campground has water and electricity and a dump station. Empty on the way out and you're ready for the next day or two of camping. hope this helps you some, but don't look for any big ticket campgrounds in the UP. It's a "wilderness waiting to happen" LOL

Exactly where are you looking to stay? Give me an idea and I'll let you know if I'm aware of anything around that area.

We ended up making reservations at North Country Campground in Newberry.

We camped at Lake Gogebic last year and had a great time!

What are your solutions for keeping the black flies away. Last year they didn't bite me, but they bit the DH.

Go to an Avon store, they have the original Skin So Soft. It's an oil based skin moisturizer, but has a "foo foo" smell. They just came out with a more "manly" scent that's actually being marketed as an insect repellant. It works !!!!! I don't think we've spent an evening outdoors in the last 40 years without a bottle nearby. It's the only thing I've found that really works for black flies and no seeums. Besides, it's good for your skin (unlike the commercial bug repellant).

Are you taking a boat with you? There's some of the UP's best fishing right around the corner in Curtis. There's a State Forest Campground on South Manistique Lake with a boat ramp. Excellent pike and bass fishing with lots of bluegills to keep the kids happy and you busy baiting their hooks.

Thanks for the tip on repellant. I had heard that skin so soft was a good mosquito repellant a long time ago.

I'll order from the Avon lady when I see her next.

When last in the UP we stayed at MACKINAW MILL CREEK CAMPING. They have every type of site be it FHU 50 amps on the water with a bridge view or anything lesser.

I got a new Avon book yesterday and found the Skin So Soft page. They are marketing several kinds as bug repellant. I will definitely order some of that!

No problem !!! I'm glad you found it. The original SSS has that "baby oil smell" and isn't really becomming when you run to town to pick up ice and supplies.... LOL Well, maybe for you it would be, but your husband and teenage boys.... They'll love you for getting the more "outdoorsy" scents.

Be careful and read the ingredients. If memory serves me, there's one of the SSS bug repellants that really isn't SSS, but is the stuff sold at KMart mixed with SSS. I can't remember which it is, but read the ingredients in SSS and in the bug stuff, they should be the same, the one with all the extra stuff isn't as healthy for kids.

Have fun and once you use it, you won't go outside without a bottle nearby

I have camped all over the UP of Michigan, I lived in the state over 30 years and did a lot of exploring, my favorite is Aune Osburne on the saint marys river, its full hookup and you are right on top of the Frieghters as they go by its awsome how big they are. Another favorite is Bay Mills casino the campground is on Whiskey Bay full hookup, City Park in Houghton Hancock right on the river is also a good one, full hookup, I once spent 4 of July in Baraga the casino has full hookup for 10 bucks a night and the fire works in that town were very nice, would do it again. Michigan has some of the best campgrounds you will find anywhere in the US.
