Hot water heater

I have a Suburban hot water heater. When I use electric I smell something burning and once or twice I saw smoke but I can't seem to see where it is coming from. Anyone else experience this.

Thank you

I would be looking at the 110V wiring in the junction box located at the back of the water heater. Often times the wires are simply twisted together with a wire nut, and if it comes loose the wires can arc and burn.

MAKE SURE THE TRAILER IS UNPLUGGED BEFORE doing anything.

Along with Chuckster's suggestion I would take a look at your heat limiter/thermostat under the reset button. And be sure to unplug the trailer like was mentioned. We don't want to lose a good member.....

One more item to check is the little switch on the face of the water heater that turns off 120 volt power to the element. It has also been known to fail.

This might sound TOO obvious... but is there water in the water heater?

Good Luck,

The smoke is coming from the side I can't see. It was faint and the smell wasn't that strong. I did smell it more that once. I guess I will wait till the end of the season to pull it out and check all the connections

I took the hot water heater out and this is what I found. Bad connections taped together.

Ad, thanks for the update. Kind of hard sometimes to get members to fill us all in on what the final results were. Certainly a learning experience for us all.

EdB,

Great nose!!!! way to be diligent. Something like this could have been very deadly!!!
I always tell people I work with in manufacturing, " If it smells different at any time contact someone. Wires melting don't always smell like fire or real danger. But they most definitely are. those wires are working like a controlled short to create a heater element. But at a much larger danger..
Again, Great Nose!!!!!

Thank you all.. it was intermittent which I thought was odd.the connection is where the main A.C. wires attach to the hot water heater. After removing the connections I noticed that some of the stranded wires were not in the connector. I did post this on Keystones Facebook page and they stated they will contact me. I will keep everyone updated.

Thank you all for your input!
