2001 Sprinter 252RL axle question

I had a near disaster this weekend where the axles tried to liberate themselves from my trailer. They didn't quite get to taste freedom but now I am trying to repair the damaged u-bolts etc, but my question is was my axle originally above or below the leaf spring?

I ask because right now it is below, and I'm worried that the axle was flipped with disregard for adding another perch, and now the axle is "upside down" and the camber may be off.

I want to retain the extra height of the axle under leaf combo since my truck is so tall, but I want to verify if I need to purchase and over/under conversion kit or if new u bolts and tie plate will suffice.

Regardless, the blocks in the picture are coming out.

Thank you for any advice or help.

It belongs under because if it was over it will sit even lower by about 5". I agree about removing blocks. This however will also lower the trailer. I'll be up front. The blocks where probably put there as a cheap way of raising the trailer instead of replacing those old sagging leaf springs with new one's. etrailer.com is one supplier that can get you all the hardware needed and have tec support. Good luck

The blocks may have put in in an attempt to raise the trailer for a 4X4 truck. Anyway, they look homemade and need to be removed. Axles go UNDER the springs. There is supposed to be a bracket welded on the axle tube with a hole in the center. The spring pack has a pin that sits in the hole.

I agree with both of you, the blocks were definitely the down and dirty way to lift the trailer. Looking at it today it definitely looks as if the axle should be under the leaf spring, since the tires are already pretty well tucked under the fender wells even with the two inch blocks. There is no way that axle wouldn't bang the frame over bumps if it were above the leafs.

I will order stock length replacements from etrailer and determine a path forward from there.

Thank you for the help.

It does not matter much but can we get a better look at the nearest axle in the photo. Is it me or is that axle 90* of how it's suppose to be ?

The front axle rolled on me and the back axle came completely out from under the leaf spring and is only hanging on by the u bolt.

So I am currently working on returning it to stock, hence the question regarding the axle originally being above or below the leaf spring.
