Payload and Towing Capacity Only Part of the Issue
I often read on this Forum that my truck has X pounds of payload or Y pounds of towing capacity. While these ratings are a part of the equation they are not the whole enchilada. There are other things that need to be taken into account such as gross axle weight rating GAWR and gross combined weight GCW. I think it would be a good idea if we at least all agreed on all of these towing issues when we're talking about the towing capacity for our trucks. What do you think?

I hope we can. For all intents and purposes "towing capacity" is totally meaningless; an individual won't have "that" truck in most cases and those numbers are just pulled out of a hat IMO for advertising/bragging purposes. After that, all the weight parameters; payload, gawr (front/rear), gvw and gcvwr are ALL equally important. You don't/can't pick and choose which ones you want to comply with, if I recall on the stickers it always says "must not exceed" on all of them.

Most NEW RV people. after asking some questions here look at the Truck Towing Capacity, and then RV Capacity and say I'm not going to fill that much weight, but they forget Gas for the TV, both of their weight and things in the truck, propane weight, tools etc on and on, then.....
WOW we are overweight.... As most of us that have been around 25 years for me, we have learned that items added to the TV or RV add up quick....so ALWAYS go for a Bigger TV, so if you think a 150 is where you want to be at go to a 250....250 go to a 350 SRW and if you are going big, like me Go to 350 DRW to be safe...

According to the folks that bought a 1/2 ton truck and a trailer that obviously (to the experienced) is too much for the truck it's a moot point. Why? Because pick one.....
A. I won't ever put that much weight in the trailer
B. I only tow short distances, you know, 150 miles or so from home, except twice a year when we go on vacation from Seattle, WA to Orlando FL and back over a 3 day weekend.
C. I ALWAYS drive the speed limit (except during "B").
D. The kids and wife are light and the dogs are small so we don't put much in the truck.
E. I have air bags, overload springs, extra heavy duty sway bars, a supercharger on the IL 4 cyl. engine so my TV is really like have a Deuce and a Half.
F. I over inflated the tires so they hold more wt.
G. I've already bought this stuff and am so upside down in my finances that I use my butt for my mouth.
H. All of the above.

Seriously, if we could agree on the importance of these parameters and how to use them the discussions on the forum would be much more usable, cohesive and way more logical.

Sorry to hear about the surgery Chip. Wishing you a speedy, uneventful recovery.
As far as the weight parameters, we shouldn't have to agree on the importance as individual users, the manufacturers TELL us they must be adhered to (all of them). With that knowledge anyone that disagrees with them is just running on a tangent all their own making up stuff as they go along based on whatever fits their particular scenario (see Marshall's post above). As long as folks do that I'm afraid we will continue to talk about weights, which ones mean what, which ones to disregard etc. until the cows come home. It's unfortunate but although they seem absurd, the list Marshall put together is actually real; I'm sure we've all read those comments on this forum and others.

It may vary by manufacturer, but typically payload numbers are derived with a full tank of gas and all fluids topped off.

Hope you recover quickly and have a successful outcome. I'm going in on the 12 th. for the 7 th cervical spine surgery. This time they are implanting a cervical spine stimulator to block the pain from the previous 6 surgeries.

I guess I can't complain about my problems! Best wishes to you and everyone here.
As for the subject, I find the information given by the truck and trailer manufactures is so misleading and confusing at times for someone new to rv'ing.
The other big problem is sales people! Last year I was in Quartzsite browsing through some 5th wheels and the salesman was telling me that whatever my trucks tow capacity was I could tow a 5th wheel 25% heavier!
I'm sure he was selling that same story to new buyers who didn't know any better. That's just one example.

Years ago we had a Dodge Durango R/T. Looking at campers the salesman asked what TV we had. I told him and stated that it had a 7,500 lb. tow rating but that I wouldn't consider anything over 5.500 lb. empty. First thing he showed us was a 30' + unit with a 10K empty wt. I looked at the DW and said we're done here. I feel bad for for the newbies who #1 believe the lies of the truck salesman and then have it reinforced by the RV salesman.

I haven't had spine surgery; my wife has. I have had 7 surgeries on one poor knee - not like a spine. I am wishing, and praying, for a perfect surgery and outcome. You will be in our thoughts.

I have a herniated C6/C7 disc in my neck. It was pinching a nerve, which was the worst pain I have ever felt. Fortunately, I was able to recover without surgery. I wish you the best possible outcome for your surgery and a speedy recovery!
