LED TV Power

We just bought a 2018 Hideout 28BHSWE which came with a 50" flat screen LED TV, I asked the dealer about being able to run the tv off the batteries (2 6V's) using an inverter and was told no problem, check wattage the tv draws and decide from there how big an inverter you need. TV draws 135 Watts, I bought a 450 watt inverter, one that plugs into the cigarette type power plug behind the tv. My problem is we wanted to watch a DVD our first time out, not plugged in, the tv powered on, the name of the manufacturer flashed on the screen and that was it. No picture no sound, couldn't even pull up the menu with the remote, I tried it again when we came home, because we had a signal now, I had sound but no picture. Am I missing something or is this even a possibility? Any advice would be appreciated. Sorry for being long winded.

I tried using a 750w (450w should be fine) inverter for this same purpose. I found that the wiring from the batteries to the cigarette plug were undersized for this application. Same problem you describe. I ran #10 wiring from the battery distribution point to the inverter located at the entertainment center. Plugged the TV in to the inverter and everything worked fine. Have watched several movies while boon-docking no problem since the DVD/CD player in the /cougar is 12v the only thing running off the inverter is the TV.

The inverter takes a 12v input and provides a 120v output. That's how the TV is powered.

For your application besides the wattage output capacity of the inverter, I would get a pure sine wave inverter.

Canonman, so that I have this straight, you ran a #10 wire from your converter to the inverter by your TV? Was that from an open circuit?

The pos side of the battery is connected to a breaker close to the battery. I came off the "field" side of the breaker with #10 running it to the entertainment center. I connected it there to the inverter then plugged the TV directly into the inverter.
I think you just need larger wire from your 12v source to your inverter to carry as many amps as possible.
You wouldn't come from the converter breaker/fuse panel since that would require the converter to be on which isn't possible without a generator when boon-docking.

Oh OK I'll have to take a look, we are going out again tomorrow for a few days, so I'll figure something out when we get back. Thanks for all the advice.

tehrich,

Your problem is the available 12 VDC power. The cigarette lighter socket on the TV amplifier is rated at 10 amps. Ten amps at 12VDC is 120 watts. You're trying to run a 450 watt inverter (450 watts at 120 volts is only 3.75 amps)... You are trying to power that inverter in an "inadequate" 12 volt source. Try using a set of battery clips and a battery or a "jump starter" and you should be able to power the TV without problems.

Just so you know, lets say the TV and inverter consume 150wh, then for every hour you watch TV you're going to draw down the batteries 12.5ah. Assuming you have 225ah of battery, that's 9 hours of TV watching before you need to recharge (discharge no more than 50%). In reality it will be less because you'll also have to consider the parasitic load as well as lights, water pump etc.

Never been boon docking where watching OTA TV was even a consideration. 90 min or so for a movie is all we've used the inverter for except for charging cell phones and lap tops.
Our Zamp solar has been able to keep up with no problems so far. Also have a genny for those days "when the sun don't shine".
