50 amp extension cord

We still don't get far from home, but I'm hoping in the near future we will. Currently I carry but rarely use the 30 amp extension for the 30 amp cord. Most places we go to are only 30 amp.

I want to plan for the day when we can travel, and I will only take the 50 amp cord (along with a 30 amp adapter).

So, the question to this long intro is, in your experience, do I need a 50 amp extension cord?

Am I reading that you always carry a 30A cable with extension but you have a 50A trailer? You ask if someday you might be able to just take a 50A cable. Why are you taking a 30A cable? It has to have an adapter at the trailer if you are 50A. Why not use the 50A cable and use an adapter at the ped and forget the 30A cable?

Better to have a not need then need and not have...…. Get yourself a 15 or 25 foot 50 amp extension just in case

Currently every place we've gone locally with the exception of one has been 30 amp. I think in our limited travels we only ran into a couple of places that had 50 amp. Always took the 50 and stored it under the bed.
When we get to go longer and farther, then I'll take the 50 only. We'll need all the storage we can get.

Why do you carry a 30A cable and extension as your "go to" cable for a 50A trailer? Plug in the 50A cable, extension if needed, and put the adapter at the ped. No 30A cable, no 30A extension etc. So much cleaner to me - and less "stuff".

I have a 40' 50amp cord and I've never had a need for an extension cord... but we only stay in COE & State parks and RV resorts.. The plug is in the back cap on the drivers side and will reach past the pin in the front..

I have needed 40' of sewer hose more than a few times though...

And frequently more than 25' of water hose..

There are a few cg in PA that have a central electrical "board" for 4 and some 6 sites that can end up over 50' away. I don't know where you are considering traveling to but I'd suggest checking out campgroundreviews.com . Great site with accurate info. As for the 30 amp extension it will limit you to 30 amps so you cannot run your air con and your microwave at the same time. While a 50 amp extension is more expensive and weights a lot more in my febal mind it's more useful. YMMV

I agree with others. Use the 50 amp and put a 30 adapter on end. Less resistance is good thing. Get a 50 amp extension if necessary. Long distances mean more resistance so again a 50 amp cable (even if you are only using 30 amp power) is a good thing. My .02 cents

The simple answer is Yes, get the extension. My 5th wheel came with 40' 50 amp, I bought a 25' extension, cut the 40 in half with new ends, now the longest, heaviest is 25', which has worked most everywhere & have 65' total, which I have used a handful of times in the last 10 years. Seems like they are always a foot too short.

Thank you all for your responses. I believe I'll be on the lookout for a 15' to 25' extension.

Javi, is your 40' 50 amp SO cable or the hard plastic OEM cable. I switched to SO cable and now my 40' cable will easily fit in a 3 gal bucket.
