Cougar fifthwheel Bumper Problem

Hello, I saw this forum when I Googled problems with cougar bumpers. I found a post from someone that had the exact same problem as I had with the bumper tearing off the frame after mounting a bike. I think the metal of the four inch square tube is just too thin to support any weight other that the spare tire. I think his was a 2011 and mine is a 2012. I noticed mine has some additional brackets welded on to help with the support that his didn't have, but it still failed the same way.
My rig is a 2012 Cougar 27RKS with a 2012 Ram 2500 diesel. I've been RVing since the late 70's and have never had a problem with the bumper falling off before.

If it's the slide out bumper like my 2013 280RLS, it is only rated at 200 pounds. It really does not take much before you hit that limit. When it's extended, there is significant play in the system that allows it to bounce which allows the weight to gain momentum. I removed the spare when I mounted the bikes because it clearly put me over the max weight on the bumper!

I think the general consensus here on the forum is to advise folks not to mount bikes directly and only to your bumper for the reason you outlined above. Many members have installed bike racks that are mounted to a support that is welded on the frame. They usually take the RV into a welding shop and have one fabricated aand welded there which in turn is attached to the usual, square receiver.

There are a variety of bike racks that fit into these receivers and there have been no reports of these modifications/upgrades breaking or separating.

Its just the standard bumper. I had a 1998 Coachman fifth wheel that I had the bumper reinforced to pull a 3500 pound boat behind it and had no problems. I guess I'll have to do the same with the Cougar. Not planning on pulling a boat anymore though...

bumpers

My 2011 26SAB had a recall for that very problem. They told me they were going to weld a couple of brackets onto the bumper and that was it. I went to my neighbourhood welding shop where the guy built me a new bumper much thicker and charged me $120.00 My end caps now stay in without being screwed in and the bike rack is safe and sound
