Stabilizers and motorhomes?

This isn't a Keystone question.

My son just bought a used motorhome, and brought it by to show it off, stay in it over Thanksgiving, and pick my brains about RVing.

When I was helping him level during setup, I noticed that there were no stabilizer jacks. As a travel trailer guy, I have no idea if these are a common accessory on a motorhome. I did crawl under it to look for strong points he could use to attach some, but most of the underside near the outside skin was all sheet-metal compartments, and the only strong points were a pair of lengthwise beams running about 24 inches inboard of both sides. I guess you could mount some there, but they would be difficult to reach with the crank, and really wouldn't give you the stability of corner mounted jacks.

If motorhomes don't come with stabilizers because they don't need them, let me know, and it will save him a lot of aftermarket expense.

The motor homes I've seen typically use hydraulic levelers as most stabilizers won't handle the weight.

I've seen them both ways. Some have had crank down stabilizers. Others, nothing - typically the smaller motorhomes. Stabilizers aren't for lifting or leveling but just stabilizing...just like trailers. You still need to use blocks for leveling.

Edit: My guess is if they didn't come with them they don't need them. They are just nice to have for the obvious reasons.

Like's been said, I've seen them without anything using drive on blocks to the full blown self leveling like the guy beside me. How old is the RV? Self leveling on Class C and smaller Class A units weren't around for a long time. If you don't see any "stabilizers" built under it or hydraulic jacks I would bet you just need to level it.

It's a 2003 Tioga, so some age to it.

Just watched a review of the Tioga (class c) and there was no indication, or mention, of stabilizers or leveling. I suspect it would just need to use legos or wood blocks for leveling.

Even some new class C motorhomes come with no leveling. Depending on the frame, it can be added.
