Alaska

Wondering how long this Covid issue will keep the Canadian border closed so we can't drive to Alaska???
Was planning a trip for June once we retire, but doesn't look good.

It’s open now, but who knows if they will close it again.

Curt, it would behoove you to fire up your laptop and google the info you're looking for. The gates are open, been open since November, and you have a lot of planning ahead of you.
We've made the Memphis-Anchorage trip a couple times, over 'top-o-the-world highway' through Dawson, etc, and it won't happen without you doing a little planning.

Quite possible it could change again in January. They are prohibiting non vaccinated truckers beginning on January 5th IIRC. Not sure what the requirements have been for the non trucking traffic up until now though. This will probably add to the supply chain issues.

I just keep reading on line that only fully vaccinated people are allowed through.
And I don't feel like being a government guinea pig.
Will have to wait and see what happens in the future.

If you are unvaccinated you cannot travel through al land border into Canada. From what i see and hear in the news up here I don't think this will be changing anytime soon. Now with the new strain taking hold. I would say your chances are slim to none and slim left town.

I am going to agree. But the new strain I hear is no worse than a sniffle like a cold. Government scare tactics.
Just wanted Mr. Trump out and Sleepy Joe to ruin our country.

I follow a FB group ( Alcan highway) and see there are lots of requirements for getting thru to Alaska, as to where you can stop and or what stores you cant enter and how long you have to get out of Canada. We have long wanted to make the trip to Alaska, but until sanity returns (if ever) to our neighbors, its just a wish list item.

I think this is an unfair statement. We are not operating insanely. To be honest Canada opened its borders to fully vaccinated American travelers long before America reciprocated and opened the border to fully vaccinated Canadian travelers. If you are fully vaccinated you can travel to Alaska with no restrictions on where you stop or for how long. If you are not fully vaccinated you simply cannot enter the country. Pretty straightforward to me.

Well you view is yours and mine is mine. The requirements for unvax'd are quite lengthy and IMO laughable to include the following along with testing,

You must follow the advice given to you by the border services officer to:
  • avoid contact with others while in transit
  • remain in the vehicle as much as possible
  • not make any unnecessary stops
  • practice physical distancing at all times
  • pay at the pump if you need gas
  • use a drive through if you need food
  • wear a suitable mask while in transit, unless you are alone in a private vehicle
  • ensure good hygiene practices if you need to use a rest area
Not a place I would want to visit. Nothing against the people, but just out of control government of which we have plenty of as well.

I will post nothing further on this topic.

The discussion of the ability to enter Canada and/or any requirements to do so is a discussion pertinent to RV travelers. Comments about personal views on the political situations in any area are......political and therefore prohibited. There are strong, differing feelings among many folks about lots of things. Inflammatory comments only serve to ignite flames. This is an RV forum so let's keep things on track.

What John (Carrottop) said is on the money. This information is readily available online to anyone, even those like ----- with half a brain. We are still planning our return to Alaska trip for next summer and foresee little or no trouble.
And K_N_L, I believe that, nope, I'm not going to say what I really feel.

Vaccination requirements are established by the "host country" not by the views or beliefs of the traveller. In other words, if you're visiting my house and I ask you not to come through the front door with muddy shoes, don't expect a warm welcome if you track up DW's floor ........

It's been that way, at least since I went to Viet Nam in 1967 and every country that I traveled to during my military career. I remember when our daughter was born in 1971 and we were in Turkey, we couldn't leave the country until DW had her smallpox booster and a "current typhoid shot". Turkey would not clear us to board a Pan Am flight in Istanbul and the USA would not allow us to process customs without those vaccinations. To complicate the issues, DW could not get those shots while she was pregnant, so she couldn't get them until after our daughter was born. Then, we had to wait 6 weeks after the vaccinations before we were cleared to travel home.

So, nothing's new with a soverign country requiring protection for their citizens from people who travel into their space. It's the same for as long as I can remember and it's been that way since DW has been cleaning our house. Enter with muddy shoes at your own peril....

Choose not to get vaccinated, don't expect "sympathy from a soverign country" and it's nothing new.... Turkey and the USA did it in 1971, long before any Covid 19 was ever dreamed to exist.....

What John said but most countries that have traded with other countries have had similar policies in place going back hundreds of years. Often sailors were quarantined to prevent the spread of a plaques and other diseases. If you look back at our country's history during the great immigrations of the late 1800's early 1900's folks were held at Ellis Isl for months if they were ill.

Don’t like their rules? Don’t plan on going. They’re doing what they feel is the best course to protect their citizens. I work with enough Canadiens to know they don’t give a flying F what you think about their policies, government or traditions. They’re good folks, and they’ll take care of their best interest, as they should.
