2016 Cougar Xlite Water Pump Question

Our water pump turns on in spurts of about 10 seconds 2-3 times per hour. We had a Palomino Trailer prior to our 5th wheel and I don't remember hearing the pump cycling like this. Is this a normal occurrence as the pump is maintaining pressure, or is there an air leak or other compromise in the water system? Any thoughts appreciated.

2 possibilities come to mind. Either a leak, or a bad pump. Check all the fittings and look for any signs of water puddling.

If you don't find ANY signs of water leaks, then the pump is faulty.

I agree that 2-3 per hour is excessive.

I would thoroughly check the RV for a water leak.

For "grins and giggles" turn the pump on and then when it comes up to pressure, switch it off. Wait about an hour and then turn on a water tap (with pump off) you should get some water flow. At least my TT does. If you get no flow then the pressure is bleeding off somewhere. As with a leak, or faulty check valve on pump.

Another thought,.... maybe the pressure switch on the pump is faulty causing the pump to cycle....

Let us know what you find.

There is a way to adjust the pressure switch.

Water pump cycling without usage

Agree with everything everyone says here, but I had a slightly different issue somewhat like this with our RV.

The water pump was cycling, frequently, about once every 5 minutes. I too expected there was a leak, or the pump was bad. Checked in detail for a leak didn't find any, so figured the pump was the cause. I was hesitant to take the pump apart, cause sometimes those things just don't take well to repairs, and since I figured I needed a new pump, I took out the old one, and took it apart, and found a small piece of silicon rubber stuck in the check valve, letting a small amount of water to leak past, causing the problem. Put it back together, and it's been working fine for the past 2 years.

I really expected it to be something like a damaged check valve.

Worst part of this, for some reason, know only to the RV gremlins, this happened at 2AM, with the pump cycling repeatedly, keeping us awake. Did turn it off then, but why start in the middle of the night?

I had a similar problem on my TT. Turned out it was the seals at the low point drains were leaking. A local Keystone dealer gave me new seals at no cost.

I'd almost be positive that you have an air or a water leak in your pump.
