That is correct. You want an on top of the counter model.

We carry one of those counter top "Opal" Ice makers. It makes the crispy "Sonic" type ice.
Of coarse, you have to stow it when traveling.

Well one thought is the really hard ice is used in blenders to make great frozen Margarita's. Soft ice isn't that great as it is so soft it turns them watery. However the soft ice is great for cocktails on the rocks, especially for folks who like to chew their ice while they drink. Always nice to have options . . .

Also stand alone and having looked for a LONG time the insides of most are close to the same thing, maybe even made by the same company, so besides noise price becomse a main factor and it appears most are in the same $$ range.

Stand Alone. One less thing to go wrong with fridge and easy cheap replacement anywhere if and "when it does fail" . LOL

Amen to that!
Our appliance repairman said the in-the-door ice & water dispenser is the biggest failure item in appliances.
