Tunnel height: Cougar XLite 28SGS

We are about to drive the Blue Ridge Parkway (BRP) over 8 days, from Front Royal to Asheville. We were warned there are tunnels. I checked our specs with Keystone and it says our height is 11'11" (12 feet sounds better). Does that include AC on top?
Anyone else travel it in an RV? I did a search and didn't see any posts.
Thanks in advance!
Debbie

Tunnel clearances on BRP are listed by the National Park Services and you will have no problems with any of them. The lowest clearance is 13'1". Some may list 11' but staying closer to the center of the road will give more clearance. It is done all the time.

Published heights do include the A/C and any other items that are standard from the factory, yes?

Factory standard, Yes. Optional second A/C and vent covers, No. It is always best to measure for yourself .... Peace of mind and nobody else to blame if not correct. Length of rig and possible rise of roadway just before or just after entrance of tunnel or overpass need to be considered also.

Our Raptors are from 13'2" to 13'4" to the top of the AC unit. Never actually measured it myself probably should. Whip antenna about 6" above that. Traveled in and around Asheville went through tunnels. Wish I could be more specific. Friends with a Jayco Pennacle drove entire Blue Ridge Highway. Think it was around 12-12.5 feet.

I would assume the major interstate tunnels heights are on gps maps, if you believe these Rv gps system, I have never received a warning and still have AC on the Raptor. As stated when in question stay in highest section. Hmmmmm believe gps, same one that put me on a road, only seen a single amish horse and buggy for miles

measure your height hooked up to your truck. the campground we host at has a 12/6 tunnel there are plenty of warning signs. but 3 or 4 times a year we get a 5th wheel that takes there front a/c off or busted front end caps, the story we get is that i saw the sign i thought i would fit. There is a alternate route to get into campground it is 3 miles of gravel and some campers just wont do it and suffer the consequenses, it doesnt bother me to take gravel just go slow

I would think that getting a very accurate height measurement (to within an inch) for something that is ~12 feet off the ground when you're measuring a peak that is most likely in the middle of the trailer isn't something easily done. Certainly a two person job.

Get close and round up by 6" or to the nearest foot.

I sat on the roof near the edge, 2x4 with level on top of it held steady with one hand with board on highest point of A/C unit, tape measure extended to touch ground and held at 2x4 with the other hand. 12' 2" (mfgr specs 12' 3") In my mind, anything less than 13' and I'm looking for alternate routes. If less with poor options to by-pass, I will go slow with a spotter. Haven't encountered enough to really have confidence of the posted height when you consider re-paving and time.

Quick question here about those websites and GPS and maps.

How often are these measurements redone and the software, maps and signage updated?

The reason I ask is that when roads are re-paved they add more pavement which will alter those figures.

I am not sure how much on average paving companies add to road surfaces, I have a buddy who is in the paving industry and will ask him.

Interstate bridge clearance by Federal law is 16' in rural areas, 14' in urban.
Didn't look up the year, but it was established to insure the military could move equipment in the need of national defense.

I'm not sure about state and county roads. I think a trucker's atlas would be a good tool to have.

Good question, I am still wondering how many of these tunnels or bridges are actually on these GPS maps. As we all know these GPS systems are no better than the basic maps and the attribute data attached such as tunnels. Based on this this uncertainty I stick to interstates as much as possible.

Texted my buddy, found out he does not work at that number anymore, anyway the guy who answered the text says that on a repave they add on average of 40 mm, or roughly 1 1/2 inches.

As PARAPTOR says I to stick to the main highways for the most part.

Most repaves I have seen lately they grind up the old black-top and recycle it back into the pavement. I would assume they would do this at least on underpasses or eventually they all would be low clearance. Anything under 14' (in the states) must be marked even on local roads.

Howdy All;

Best recommendation for doing a measure is to either get on top
with a 2x4 and a level, have the end of a tape measure attached
to the chunk of wood. Lower tape to ground so your none climbing
member of the event can touch it to the ground and read the result
after you have leveled the 2x4 across the highest spot the climber can
find. As mentioned in previous posts add a few extra inches to make you
comfortable. Don't go under anything shorter than that...

We measured and we're just under 12' by fraction. Keystone said 11' 11"".
First lesson learned was that the Skyline Drive is where we start, at Front Royal, Va. It goes around 100 miles to Staunton, Va, then you get on the BRP! So far so good. Spent 2 nights at North Fork RV Resort thru Passport America for only $21, but second night, Friday, no PA but used Good Sam so only $30. The sites were very short, 30 foot so truck was awkwardly parked. They don't make "guests" feel welcome and the rules, signs and regulations were a bit overwhelming. We visited the Skyline Caverns - nice but Luray are so much more beautiful - and did two hikes in the Shenandoah National Park for a total of about 9 miles. First time back here and I was wiped out after first hike of 5.5. So went shorter next day!
We're off to Staunton to stay at the KOA for at least 2 nights and two more hikes. We've visited the town before, but never hiked there!

BillnDeb, if you have time there's a KOA near Lynchburg on I think 130, it's a mile off the BRP, I think you take the Natural Bridge exit. It's new ownership and they are fixing it up. Stayed there last year for a week, really enjoyed it. It's Lynchburg NW/BRP KOA. There's another KOA right off I-81 but that's not it.
