Long Bed for Me

I have a F350 V10 long bed. I would not have a short bed as I would not know what to do with everything I take with me when I head south for the winter plus with short bed trucks you have to have some sort of slider hitch. Off \course that's me.

You'll love it! I have a 15' Denali with the Duramax and a 15'Cougar 5th wheel and it pulls it like there's nothing back there.

F350 SRW shortbed 6.7 diesel, B&W Companion slider hitch. Did 22 states in 5 weeks in 2013 from CT to CA then north and back. I did crunch the cab a little last year in NH making a turn that I thought I could make without sliding. Nothing serious though.

Currently have a 2005 Chevy Silverado 2500hd 6.6l Short bed. I have a slider but have yet to use it in the 6 years I've owned it. It's so rusted I doubt it would work any way. So far I haven't come close to my cab and we always have a back in site on our trips and pad at home.

I can't say much about having a DRW since ours is just a SRW, but I definitely have learned about parking a long truck. For me, back into a parking spot if at all possible. It makes it easier to get out when you need to leave versus having to try and back out if people are parked around you. Back-up cameras and blindspot mirrors are your friend too. Small hint for backing in - check and double-check for what is behind you the full truck width, especially if backing into a spot on the edge of a parking lot. Light poles make a funny "ting" noise when touched by a bumper, and any children with you will not let you live it down - for years!

I will also admit to being one of "those". I have a tendency to take up 2, sometimes 4 parking spots depending on how wide and long they are. I've found most spots are definitely not long enough for a crew cab long bed truck, and some aren't wide enough for the SRW either. So, I just park way out where no one else does and get my exercise hoofin' it into the store or where ever.

I drag a about 14k lbs around with a 2007 Chevy 3500HD, DRW, Duramax and Allison tran. My truck doesn't even work up a sweat. I do sometimes when trying negotiate the beast in tight spaces; backing up the 5ver is limited by my trucks turning radius ( and my skills or lack there of). I definitely feel more stable with DRW when towing and I wanted to be able to drag this thing up mountains from time to time.

I've towed my fiver the last 3 seasons with my F150 Ecoboost Max Tow short bed (5' 7"). The Sidewinder pin box takes care of turning clearance. I am now trading in on an F350 6.7 Powerstroke SRW because I plan to do a lot more towing and the next fiver will be heavier.

More is definitely better in these scenarios. I bought a a diesel to have piece of mind knowing that I can almost tow just about any trailer there is out there. Now if only I could convince the old lady into letting me get that triple axle Voltage toy hauler we saw at the RV show.

I prefer a long bed because I need the room to carry stuff back and forth between FL and TN, summer and winter homes. The 5th wheel is stored in our TN driveway. We bot the Montana HC when we had a 12 RAM 2500 with 2,070# payload capacity. Not adequate and unsafe. We traded for a 14 RAM 3500 LB SRW 3.42 rear with a 4,235# payload. Perfect for the 5er. Towed 4,900 miles last summer to New England twice and I love the truck. I have not experienced any stability problems with this rig. Hope my opinion helps.
