Bent Keystone Slide Out Bumper/Rack

Looks like I have the same issue with my slide out bumper/rack as a lot of Keystone owners. I plan to remove the slide out bumper/rack from my trailer and attempt to straighten the slide bars with heat. Hope that goes fairly easy. I will not reinstall the spare tire or mount since many believe the added weight is the problem along with the poor design. Has anybody had luck with Keystone replacing the entire slide out bumper/rack?

The thing is a total POS. I never used mine once, in fear of dragging it when extended. Also, the spare tire on mine hung below the bumper, further drag. Had my brother a welder extend the post to get the spare tire higher so i would stop dragging it on the tiniest of of inclines. Awful design, all the way around. Glad that trailer is gone, only for this reason, it was a great trailer otherwise.

X2 on the POS opinion! I'm looking to remove our "cargo rack" and replace it with a 2" receiver so I can safely carry our bikes. The stinky slinky will be in a 3" PVC tube mounted under the back edge of the Cougar. the only hold up is convincing the CFO to approve the capitol funds for this upgrade.

The "extendable cargo rack" was a great idea in concept and a terrible idea in execution....

If you think about it, if the weight of the spare tire causes problems. how would removing the spare and replacing that weight by putting cargo on the rack be any better for the rack ??? If 50 pounds "bends the rack" surely 300 pounds can't "unbend it"....

There's a reason it, like the Corvair and the Chrysler turbine engine that ran on anything from moonshine to French perfume are both no longer on the market...

Two ways to "look at ownership of a trailer with an extending rack:
1. You've got a "relic" that may become a collector's item.
2. You've got "extra weight" that will never be beneficial to your GVWR...

Either way, when you decide to trade, you probably won't be able to find a trailer with a similar rack on the "new trailer sales lot", so don't get too used to "enjoying it"...

Cougar slide out bumper improvements

Here is the Mods I made to ours so I can use the installed receiver and Motorcycle rack for our scooter of 300 lbs. Be sure to toss the 1/2" hitch pins and replace with 5/8" bolts and I installed a 1/4" spacer plate between the "L" bracket and slide rails to raise the slide on both sides. 3" sq tube running from 4" sq tube bumper receiver to a 3" X 2" angle at back of shelf all welded. Feel free to call if you want. Rob in Ca 831.566.4881
