Westlake Tires

Had a blow out with my one of the Westlake tires. Tire blow out caused $1000
damage to the fifth wheel. I'm very diligent at checking the tire pressure and keeping it at 80PSI. My rough estimate on the mileage was between 4000 and 4500 miles towing. Tires were three years old.

The fifth wheel is repaired and today it's getting five new tires including the spare. I just didn't trust the remaining Westlake tires. I decided to get the Goodyear Endurance ST225/75R15, it was between Goodyear and Maxxie. The Goodyear won out as it is a more stout tire and has a higher highway speed. I always run with the cruise set at 62MPG, but I wanted a little higher speed just in case.

The good news is the new Goodyear have a DOT build of 20/19

Also had to replace the truck tires also three years old, Firestone OEM wore out just sort of 23000 miles. Rotated every 5000 miles and kept inflation up to specs.

Just put new Michelin Defender LT245/75R17 Load E. Good news here the DOT build date on the Michelin 19/19.

Hopefully every thing will be back to normal. Happy camping.

I think the GY Defender is a light truck tire IIRC!
Hopefully he meant Endurance.
Also either Michelin stamps their build date opposite of GY or building so far ahead that they're already building into mid 2020.

Thanks for clarifying, captbru.

Wouldn't want someone spending hours and hours online trying to find a tire that doesn't exist and more importantly, wouldn't want you installing passenger tires on your RV.....

Captbru: thanks for posting that. We ran with the original China bombs last year and were fortunate enough to get 9,000 miles out of them without any problems. I won't be pressing my luck this year. Our TT is booked in for 4 new GY Endurances as soon as we get there.
Reading through the horror stories here (yours and others) has convinced me that a new set of tires for the trailer every 2 years will be cheap insurance against the kind of damage your trailer suffered.

Ran our 2017 21RBS two years, approx. 8-10,000 miles on Westlakes. Would have changed them for this year's tour. Currently have TK china bombs on our new 22RBS. This will be their only trip.
