Carbon 357 Questions

Greetings everyone. I'm new here and new to Keystone RV's and toyhaulers. I've got a couple questions that I hope someone can answer. The dealer was pretty vague on the 1st one and seemed confident on the 2nd one which worries me a bit.

1.) The 357 has 2 black water and 2 grey water tanks. The Carbon spec sheet shows 69 gallons of each. Any idea on how that is broken up? Is one black/grey tank larger than the other?

2.) This is more subjective and seems to be pretty polarizing in all the forums I've visited but I have a 2006 Dodge 2500 Quad-Cab pickup with a 6.25 box and the 5.9 Cummins that has a cold-air intake and a Edge EZ pushing it. It's got tons of power and I've recently added Timbrens on the rear and am running Bilstein shocks (not lifted) but other than that, the suspension is stock. I've got the 18k Superslider hitch and I've pulled the 357 home from the dealership with ease but I have not been out camping in it yet and it worries me that my truck isn't enough for it. I've seen dozens of pictures and read dozens of people that pull this size of toy hauler with the same truck but it doesn't make me feel a whole lot better because I've seen similar amount that say a 1 ton is necessary. The dealer said I would be "fine" but then again, they just wanted to sell their product to me.

I would love to get your opinions and maybe some pictures and real-world experience notes on towing something similar.

Thanks in advance!

MontanaMike

You have 2 bathroom so 2 black tanks (69 total) so about 35 gallons for each bathroom. Two Gray again total of 69 therefore galley about 35 gallons and another 35 for the main bathroom shower sink and shower. Some rear bathrooms run there sink water into the black tank.

Now just general comment there is no way you are within the safety/design limits of that TV pulling a Carbon 357 with a pin weight around 3100 pound empty. There is plenty information on this site to figure payload capacity so I need not so through it in detail. Weigh truck alone fueled up and loaded as if you were going camping. Subtract that weight from the GVWR identified inside the door. That is what you have to work with. As far as do others pull these near 40 foot toy haulers with 2500s, YES , and a Toyota PU pulled the Challenger

Edit server crashed looks like some made it

Great trailer. Congrat's on your new trailer. You are going to have a blast. As you know this is a "hot topic". I always lean on the DRW side of things when this comes up, but I am betting many are using a similar setup as you are. Someone will be along soon with the math behind all this. Either way good luck.

Dang and I was worried about if my 2006 ram 3500 4x4 mega cab srw was going to be enough for that pin weight. Glad you put that at ease. Do you have air bags on your 2500.
We pick our new 357 up Thursday.

No airbags but I've added Timbrens which came with high recommendations from a lot of Dodge and RV sites I looked at. Doesn't mess with your unloaded ride and won't leak because they're not airbags. Fairly inexpensive compared to bags and really easy to install.

Also...a 1 ton isn't in the budget for the time being. Looks like I may be camping the driveway for a while.

I know...there are even great deals on 2015 1 tons at the local Dodge shop and my 2006 3/4 ton CTD with low miles (76k) has great book value however my wife doesn't want vehicle payment. I'm still working on her though so a new 3500 may still be possible. ;-)

I don't really think I need a dually though. Don't want one either due to how much time we rumble around in the mountains in my truck.

The Timbrens are great. Already put the unloaded weight on my truck and watched it squat pretty bad and then I installed the Timbrens and although it did squat, the nose of the pickup wasn't pointed at the sky and it really leveled out the load. I ended up getting mine at Amazon.com because I couldn't find it cheaper anywhere else on line. With Prime they was $165 delivered.

Pick up our 357 yesterday, love it already. I do see either the Timbrens or airbags going on soon though. It dropped the truck a good 3", not awful but more than I like but it still pulled like a champ.

I brought my 357 home with a gmc 2500 in dec. Bought a 3500 drw in jan. Had it out twice in March. The 357 is a beast but the 3500 drw gives me piece of mind. I also installed Firestone air bags. Pulls like a dream. Ymmv.

Well, the wifey said "go for it" so I bought a new 2015 3500 crew cab long box with a 20k Companion/turn-over ball hitch. The "haul" rating on truck is listed as 4,433 and the tow rating is just under 17,000 pounds so I should be good to go now. Nice thing is the Timbrens that I bought for my 2006 2500 fit my 2015 3500 so I have a little load-leveling if it needs it.

Now my question is: The hitch has multiple different levels it can be set up and it looks like the dealership set it up at the mid level all around. Should I move it up to gain a little more clearance or leave it? This is it with the toy-hauler unloaded and it's full dry weight on my truck.

I would say it depends on if you take it off road or not. I have 8" of clearance from the rails to the cap on my 3500 and 357. figure out your rake on the 357 when hooked up and go from there. Try to get as level as you can, but always maintain at least 6" of clearance from the top of the bed rails

Thanks for the response and I'll measure it next time I hook up. We do go off-pavement to camp but I wouldn't call it off-road.
