Time for a new(er) truck.
My current truck, 03 2500HD gmc dmax is getting on. I'm going truck hunting and was thinking DRW is the way to go. 07 2955 Montana is 12200 GVWR . Pin should be about 2800#. Is the 3500 SRW enough truck? Does the CCC vary from one to the other?
I'm thinking just go for the duelly and forget about it. The wife hates them. I'd rather not worry about if I'm over weight and getting sued in the unlikely event of an accident.

FWIW, my nephew just got a new ‘23 F350 diesel, single rear wheel. Payload is 4200 and change. 800# more than my ‘15 which is otherwise pretty much the same. For that rig a single rear wheel one ton will be plenty. However, new truck may encourage new camper lol.

You can't go wrong with a dually. They are so stable. And if go 3500 diesel you'll have power for anything.
I'm on my 3rd dually 3500 long bed, crew cab. First was a gasser, second a diesel (used), and third brand new with the Duramax. 9 years later, it's still going strong!

It's really all about the math.
Start with your 2800 lb pin weight. Add to that people, hitch, and additional gear. Basically add up everything you're going to put in or on the truck. That total number is your payload requirement.
Next, look at the yellow sticker on any potential truck and look at the published total cargo capacity for that specific truck. The sticker will say something like "total passengers and cargo not to exceed xxxx lbs".
The truck's payload rating needs to be higher than your total payload requirement. If it is then that truck should safely work for you. Beyond that, as stated, you can't beat a dually for stability. I can't imagine going back to an SRW.

I didn't realize the 3500 had such a high CC. I imagine there's a difference between a short and long bed as well in CC. with the 1 tons.
Everyone was saying to check the yellow sticker on the door edge. my 03 doesn't have one. I found a white one in the glove box. It took me a while (years) to find it, and was shocked the CC was only 2035#.I will add up all I'm going to carry and if I'm borderline, duelly it is.

Well we bought a 2016 Ram 3500 DRW to future proof ourselves. Well a bit of a surprise, we scaled the truck ready to tow and it scaled 10,000#! Yellow sticker payload listed as 5,411#, so we added 1,411# based on the 14,000# GVWR before hitching up. Our 5th wheels pin is 2,800# so the math is 2,800 + 1,411= 4,211# so we would have been tight with a SRW, just food for thought.

Yikes!! I'm up to 3500# without a couple grand kids and a 1/2 cord of firewood.
OH, and the dog, carrier etc.
