When I called Ohio to get an EZ Pass in June before our trip I was told the regular passenger vehicle one could not be used because of the fifth wheel. And would need "the blue one" that's for more than 2 axles. So, got the blue EZ Pass in the mail and used it. I loved not having to stop and pay at every toll booth!

So, curiosity, has anyone else crossed Indiana from state line to state line staying on I-80 with a normal EZ Pass and what did it cost you? With the blue pass, it cost $30.43 eastbound and $31.37 westbound. I'm just curious if it is more with the blue than a normal one towing a fifth wheel. We used the pass the whole trip in Illinios, Indiana, and Ohio on I-90, I-80, and whatever there may have been to get around Cleveland on I-480/271. The whole trip both ways was $169.
Indiana charges a toll on interstates? Do you HAVE to pay, it's not just for "express" lanes?
I haven't been on I-80, just I-70 and don't remember any tolls.

I've only ever been across on I-80 over the years. And every time we've had to pay tolls no matter if on the express lane or not.

No tolls on I70 in Ohio or IN. I use the white EZ pass on short stretches of I80/90 in OH & IN quite frequently, both towing & not towing. Axles are counted & our account is charged accordingly. You're all making this way too hard!

Be sure your ex pass account is up to date regarding your vehicles and license plates. Went over Key bridge in MD over Memorial Day weekend. Just got a bill for $18 since ez pass pa didnt pay MD for the $12 toll when apparently my trandponder wasnt picked up and MD submitted my tag number from the rv to ezpass for payment. $18 is the non ezpass rate for 4 axles. Cost be $6 extra because I didnt update ezpass with the new tag id when we upgraded in April.

Any new thoughts on E-Z Pass? CT is getting ready, and RI right behind!

In MD it is faster, but when pulling a trailer you lose the discount according to the ezpass office.

Having one makes traveling on toll roads and bridges a LOT easier, discount not considered. Just get into a long line at a toll booth once with a big trailer and watch those breezing through the EZ-Pass lanes and you'll understand.

When we were looking to get our EZ Pass, I noted different states charged different amounts. New Hampshire seemed to be the most cost effective for the actual device. As we live in Florida and our state has its own pass (which is not recognized anywhere else) we mail ordered the EZ Pass from NH; it works like a champ, even going into Canada from NY.

I have had I-PASS (Illinois version and is part of the EZ-PASS consortium) for several years (north of 10 at this point). I have 2 blue transponders for pulling trailers (one for the Excursion (class 6) and one for the dually (in Illinois is a class 7 truck when towing)). The Excursion pays car toll rate when not towing and higher rates when towing and its all automatic. The Illinois tollway system is in the process of upgrading all the exits to count axles (some don;t yet so you pay towing rates even when not towing).

The Dually pays truck rates always. it is higher when towing. In Illinois, and this does apply to towing your RV, rates are higher for trucks from 6am until 10pm weekdays. there are no I-PASS discounts for trucks.

If you want to save a little money, travel Illinois at night or weekends only. Since the Illinois tollways are mostly around Chicago, that is good for traffic as well.

BTW, and I hope someone can confirm this, the federal government I heard was passing something that is forcing all states to accept everyone's electronic toll collection devices (read EZ-PASS). This was to help commercial drivers not have to have multiple devices. Anyone else heard of this one?

Mike

I live in CT as well, though I don't see us getting tolls, but I'm looking into E-Z pass as well

Can anyone tell me what you pay for when you travel across Indiana and pay a toll? Has anyone traveled a pay highway worse than the Indiana tollway? They should seriously be ashamed of themselves.

The main site for EZPASS is http://www.e-zpassiag.com/
The system is administered by the issuing state in regard to dispensing the transponders and tolls are administered by the state that the transponder is read in as I understand it. Most states will issue a transponder to non residents to accommodate transients such as contractors, military, etc.
