Hydraulic Fluid

What hydraulic fluid is best suited to top of the reservoir (slide outs) on my Alpine 5th wheel?

I think that's just ATF, but i'll be glad to hear the actual answer?

You maybe right......I have read you may use Dextron III or hydrualic but NOT to mix the two.

You could use almost anything in this system, such as ATF (any spec) hydraulic fluid or a light motor oil such as 5-20. This is a low pressure, low temperature system and you're not trying to satisfy any manufacturers clutch requirements. Mix away. Power steering fluid would also be fine. If its red, I'd use ATF or hydraulic, just so the color stays the same.

Go to Wally World and buy their cheapest ATF that they have. Doesn't need anything fancy.

OK, so?

The manual says "Type A" ATF, and I've never been able to find one that says it's Type A! There's Type F, Type M, and Type Z (and all the Dexron and Mercon stuff as well) at Wallymart. Is Type A the 'universal' one that's not labeled with any 'type' letter?

Dexron will be fine. Hard to find whale oil.

sgreene63, Howdy;

You do NOT want to top off the res. while the actuators are extended...
unless you want to have a huge puddle of fluid on the ground when you retract the Slide-out.

Servicing should be done when the actuators are fully retracted. Exercise the
system to bleed out the air, retract fully then re-check the level.

If you service the res. while the actuators are extended then all the excess
will have to go 'somewhere' you could also blow out some seals or O-rings
or cause other damage...

I never had any hydraulic leaks until I filled the res to the recommended level of my 2004 Everest. It continued to leak around the pump and res until it reached the original level and then never leaked again.

The level on our 2013 Alpine appears to be low when all are retracted, but I am leaving it alone and so far have not had any problems.

"Dexron will be fine" - OK, which Dexron. There's II, III and IV. Still would like to know what 'Type A' is in the first place.

All dexrons are backwards compatible. 6 works for any, 3 works for 2 etc. just not the other way around.

I'm still a bit confused here. The documentation calls for something named Type A, which doesn't seem to be available (as best I can read the really tiny print on the back of the bottles), Earlier someone said all that doesn't matter as there's no high temps or clutches involved. Others have said just throw in anything that's called 'ATF'. OK, I've got an old jug of Mercon stuff in my shed. Will that work as well? Think I've got to get to the manufacturer on this.
