Passport GT 2704RK hitch size

Is a 1,200lb Weight Distribution Hitch too big for this unit or drop down to a 1000lb

Trailer is 6400lb dry and hitch weight 660lbs

Will carry full water tank (43 gal), 2 batteries.

70 lbs in passthrough

Loaded in total would between 7100 and 7600 depending on trip

Too little and you will get a lot of bounce, too big and the ride is harsh. My tongue weight is 925 lbs. and I use 1,000 lb. bars without issue. My hitch system is the Eaz-Trekker and the bars are called 1,000 lb bars but are rated to 1,200 lbs. The 1,200 lb bars are rated to 1,400 lbs. Yours may be different, but you should be good with 1,000 lb bars.

That trailer has a gvwr of 8200lbs. Approx. hitch weight at gvwr @13% would be a little over 1000lbs. The 1200 bars aren't going to hurt you, just set your weight distribution system correctly - you don't have to put 1200 lbs. of leverage on them.

So to be clear. I already have a Eaz-Lift TR3 1,200lb hitch.

This should not be too heavy for the trailer. I was just reading that too heavy a hitch can cause problems with frame or axle issues.

I can always return and purchase a lighter hitch

Thanks

The only details on the installation of that hitch is a Camco video (Eaz Lift). In that video the illustration shows what appear to be height adjustments holes for the height of the platform the bars sit in back on the frame. Every installation video I've seen only shows them bolting it to the frame then levering the bars onto the support platform with nothing about adjusting that platform up or down.

If the above is the case some things to consider; I've towed a trailer with a 900lb. tongue weight with 1200lb. bars with no ill effects. I do think the type of suspension would play in that (mine was a MorRyde CR3000). If money is no object then buy new bars; the 1000 bars should be sufficient but is pretty much wasting money if it's going to cost you to switch.

I've never seen frame damage from a heavy bar on a WDH. I suppose it could happen if you were running a 6" frame and 1200lb. bars...maybe. Same with axles - it would have to be a very large mismatch in some way. Eaz Lift makes those bars in 200lb. increments so if the cost isn't much and it remove some worry get them. If they're too expensive and you need to live with the 1200 bars you can.
